Coverage across the Glasgow area

Wherever you are in the Glasgow area, we need the same three things to get started on sensor upgrades and replacement: a short description of the door, a few photos if you have them, and the address. From there we agree the price in writing and book a specialist engineer working under our management. Every town listed below has a page of its own, 5 in total.

What to think about for sensor upgrades and replacement in the Glasgow area

  • After a near miss at a door in the Glasgow area, keep a note of what happened and where the person was standing. It helps the engineer judge which zone the sensor failed to cover.
  • Swing doors in narrow corridors need sensors on the leaf to protect people on both sides. The engineer checks the swing path and any walls or fittings close by.
  • Shopping parades and older shopfronts in the Glasgow area sometimes have low transoms or canopies that limit where a sensor can be mounted. The engineer checks height and angle first.
  • Doors with side screens may need a light curtain on the leaf edge or post to protect the gap. This is one of the most common upgrades on older sliding doors.
  • Care settings in the Glasgow area often need longer hold-open times and wider safety zones for residents who move slowly, use walking frames or pause in the doorway.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Tell us what is happening. Describe the fault, or the service or inspection that is due, and send photos of the door and any label on the operator. Include the address in the Glasgow area and how much the site depends on the door.
  2. Visit price agreed in writing. We confirm the price of the visit in writing before an engineer attends. If the door can be priced from photos and its make and model, we say so at this stage.
  3. Engineer visit. A specialist engineer working under our management diagnoses the fault or carries out the service, then tests the operation of the door and its safety sensors before leaving the site.
  4. Findings and follow-up. You receive a written record of what was found and done. Any parts or further work needed are quoted in writing before they go ahead, and nothing is added without your agreement.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in the Glasgow area: questions

Can you price new sensors for my door in the Glasgow area from photos?

Often, yes. Photos of the sensor, the door from both sides and the label on the operator cover usually tell us which sensor is needed and whether it suits the controller. We can then quote the sensor and fitting in advance, with the visit price confirmed before anyone travels.

What price range should I expect for sensor upgrades and replacement in the Glasgow area?

Our guide is £195 to £495 excluding VAT (per sensor fitted), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in the Glasgow area, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Do engineers carry sensors for doors in the Glasgow area?

Engineers carry common combined and safety sensors, so many replacements can be fitted at the first visit. Light curtains and specialist sensors are ordered once the door is identified, with delivery typically 1 to 2 weeks. Photos in advance help us bring the right part first time.

Do you replace automatic door sensors in the Glasgow area?

Yes. Sensor replacement and upgrades in the Glasgow area are booked and managed by us and carried out by engineers who specialise in automatic doors. They work on sensors for sliding, swing, folding and revolving doors from most makers. The visit cost is set in writing before they attend, and each new sensor is tested before they leave.

How often should automatic doors in the Glasgow area be serviced?

No law sets a fixed interval. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Site staff should also carry out simple regular checks and keep a record of them.

Which makes of automatic door can you work on in the Glasgow area?

Engineers working under our management work on most makes of automatic door, including sliding, swing, folding, telescopic and revolving types. Some older or obsolete operators have limited parts availability. If that applies, we explain the options, which may include a replacement drive unit on the existing frame, and quote them before anything is ordered.

Do businesses in the Glasgow area have to fit automatic doors?

No law requires automatic doors everywhere. Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and Scottish guidance says powered doors improve accessibility at entrances. An automatic door is often the practical answer.
