That applies to automatic door repairs at a single shop door or across a whole estate of buildings, in any of the towns below or between them.

What to think about for automatic door repairs in Gwent

  • Older shopfronts in Gwent may have automatic doors with discontinued drive units. Ask whether parts are still available before agreeing to a large repair, as a new operator may be better value.
  • Wet and windy weather causes many false openings. Sensors over exposed entrances can react to rain and blowing leaves, and a small change to the detection zone often cures it.
  • A door with battery backup may show a fault, or fail to open in a power cut, when its battery is worn out. Batteries are a routine replacement part rather than a major repair.
  • Grit and stones in the floor guide are a frequent cause of doors sticking or stopping short. Sweeping the threshold and track area regularly prevents many breakdowns.
  • For surgeries, clinics and care settings in Gwent, a door that will not open can stop wheelchair users getting in. Plan an alternative accessible entrance and clear signs while the repair is arranged.

Standards and rules in Wales

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Explain the problem. Whether the door is stuck, slow, noisy or due its next check, a short description and a few photos tell us which kind of visit to book for automatic door repairs and what to bring.
  2. Visit cost agreed. You get the visit price in writing before we book the engineer. There are no hidden extras: parts and further work are always quoted separately and in advance.
  3. Engineer on site. The engineer inspects the operator, sensors, tracks and leaves, carries out the repair or service, and runs the door through its safety tests before it goes back into use.
  4. Follow-up quoted. You are sent a record of the visit. If something else needs attention, we quote it in writing; for doors on a service plan, the next visit date is noted on the record.

Automatic door repairs in Gwent: questions

Do you keep records of repairs for buildings in Gwent?

Yes. Each visit produces a written report of the fault found, the work done and any parts fitted or recommended. Facilities teams can keep these with the door's service records, which helps show the door is being maintained and makes repeat faults easier to trace.

How much should I budget for automatic door repairs in Gwent?

Our guide starts from £95 excluding VAT (visit including the first hour), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £114 including VAT. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Gwent, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Is it safe to keep using a faulty automatic door in Gwent?

It depends on the fault. A slow or noisy door may be safe to use until the visit, but a door that strikes people, closes unexpectedly or has damaged glass should be switched off and kept clear. If you are unsure, switch it off and use another entrance until an engineer has checked it.

Can you repair revolving doors in Gwent?

Yes. The engineers we send work on automatic and manual revolving doors as well as sliding and swing doors. Revolving doors have extra safety devices, such as stop buttons and edge sensors, which are all tested after a repair. Parts for some revolving doors take longer to source, so photos of the drive and control panel help us prepare.

Can you price a repair in Gwent from photos?

Sometimes. Clear photos of the door, the operator cover and any label showing the make and model, plus a description of what the door is doing, can let us price a likely repair before a visit. Where the cause is not obvious, we agree a diagnostic visit price in writing first and quote the repair afterwards.

What if a door in Gwent is found to be unsafe?

The engineer explains the problem and, where needed, leaves the door in a safe state, for example switched off or set so it cannot trap or strike anyone. You receive a written note of the issue. The repair or upgrade that would put it right is quoted before any further work is carried out.

Do businesses in Gwent have to fit automatic doors?

There is no blanket requirement. Service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people under the Equality Act 2010, and Welsh building regulations guidance expects entrances that are easy to open. An automatic door is a common way to meet both.
