What to think about for automatic door refurbishment in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire

  • Office blocks and business parks in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire with several matching doors can refurbish them together for a consistent finish and a lower cost per door.
  • Glass and made-to-measure leaves are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. Plan the work around that lead time, especially if a damaged leaf is temporarily boarded.
  • Older shopfronts with discontinued door systems may need equivalent parts rather than exact matches. The survey identifies what is still available before anything is ordered.
  • Busy retail units in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire may prefer the work done in stages, one leaf at a time, so the entrance stays open throughout trading hours.
  • Frames near the coast or busy roads can corrode faster. The survey checks fixings and the bottom of the frame, where water and grit tend to collect.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for automatic door refurbishment in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Automatic door refurbishment in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire: questions

Can you replace a single broken glass leaf in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire?

Yes. The leaf is made safe, measured and reglazed with new safety glass, or replaced completely if its frame is damaged. New glass is typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. Once the leaf is rehung, the door is set up again and the track and floor guide are checked.

What will automatic door refurbishment in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire cost?

Our guide starts from £395 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Do you refurbish automatic doors in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire?

Yes. Refurbishment work in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is planned and priced by us, then carried out by automatic door engineers and glaziers working under our management. There is no charge for the survey, and you receive a fixed quote with each item priced separately, from new glass and rollers to seals, floor guides, the threshold and frame refinishing.

Will our entrance in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire stay open during refurbishment?

Often, at least in part. Many jobs can be done one leaf at a time, and the work can be planned for quieter hours. If the entrance does need to close, the quote says for how long, so you can arrange another way in for staff and visitors.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

What happens once the installation in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is finished?

The engineer tests every function, including the safety sensors and the behaviour on power loss, and sets the door up with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown how to use the controls and which simple checks to make, and you receive the handover documents, including the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Is a building warrant needed for a new automatic entrance in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire?

Often, yes. Most building work in Scotland needs a building warrant before it starts, and the non-domestic Technical Handbook sets out what an accessible entrance should provide, including a clear opening of at least 800 mm. We tell you at the survey if your job is likely to need one.
