What to think about for automatic door servicing in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire
- Battery backup units wear out over time. Testing them at each service shows whether the door will still open or close safely in a power cut.
- Schools and colleges in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire often prefer servicing during holidays or after hours. Plan visits early in the year so they fall when the buildings are quiet.
- Doors on busy high streets in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire can cycle hundreds of times a day. Heavy use wears belts, rollers and floor guides faster, so these doors usually need more frequent visits.
- Care homes and hospitals in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire often need visits planned around mealtimes, medication rounds and visiting hours, so the door is not out of use at the busiest times.
- Doors on escape routes need their break-out or power-failure opening tested at every service. Tell us which doors serve escape routes so the engineer checks the right functions.

Standards and rules in Scotland
Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.
No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.
BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.
How it works
- Tell us what is happening. Describe the fault, or the service or inspection that is due, and send photos of the door and any label on the operator. Include the address in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and how much the site depends on the door.
- Visit price agreed in writing. We confirm the price of the visit in writing before an engineer attends. If the door can be priced from photos and its make and model, we say so at this stage.
- Engineer visit. A specialist engineer working under our management diagnoses the fault or carries out the service, then tests the operation of the door and its safety sensors before leaving the site.
- Findings and follow-up. You receive a written record of what was found and done. Any parts or further work needed are quoted in writing before they go ahead, and nothing is added without your agreement.

Automatic door servicing in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire: questions
Can one contract cover all our buildings in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire and nearby?
Yes. A contract can list every door across your sites, with the visits per year and the price for each door. One schedule and one set of service reports make it easier to keep records complete, and repair visits between services are charged at the contract rates.
Can you give me a price for automatic door servicing in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire?
Our guide starts from £145 excluding VAT (per visit, first door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £174 including VAT. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.
Can you service doors in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire outside opening hours?
Visits early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends can often be arranged where the building needs it, although they may be priced differently. Tell us your opening hours and busiest times when you book, and the visit price we agree will reflect the time slot.
Do you service doors in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire that another company installed?
Yes. We service most powered pedestrian doors, whoever fitted them. The first visit records each door's make, model, condition and any concerns, so later reports can be compared. If parts are no longer made for one of your doors, we let you know early so a replacement can be planned.
What should I tell you when reporting a fault in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire?
The address, the type of door, what it is doing or not doing, when the problem started and whether it is safe to use. A photo of the operator label showing the make, and a short video of the fault, help a great deal. With that, we can agree the visit price in writing and send an engineer with the right parts where possible.
What if a door in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is found to be unsafe?
The engineer explains the problem and, where needed, leaves the door in a safe state, for example switched off or set so it cannot trap or strike anyone. You receive a written note of the issue. The repair or upgrade that would put it right is quoted before any further work is carried out.
Can a home in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire get help paying for a door opener?
Scotland does not have Disabled Facilities Grants. Councils help through their Scheme of Assistance, which can include a grant for essential permanent adaptations. Ask your council whether a powered door opener could be included.
