Sensor upgrades and replacement in Hampshire

Shops, surgeries and offices in Hampshire rely on sensors that open the door in good time and keep people safe in the doorway. When they wear out, replacements are matched to the door's controller and set for the way people approach.

Sensor upgrades and replacement across Hampshire follows a simple pattern: you tell us about the door, we agree the price in writing, and a specialist engineer working under our management attends. What to think about for sensor upgrades and replacement in Hampshire

  • Rain, snow and blowing leaves can trigger radar sensors over exposed doors. Some sensors filter weather better than others, which the engineer weighs up when choosing a replacement.
  • Swing doors in narrow corridors need sensors on the leaf to protect people on both sides. The engineer checks the swing path and any walls or fittings close by.
  • Doors with side screens may need a light curtain on the leaf edge or post to protect the gap. This is one of the most common upgrades on older sliding doors.
  • Care settings in Hampshire often need longer hold-open times and wider safety zones for residents who move slowly, use walking frames or pause in the doorway.
  • Shiny, wet or newly polished floors can confuse infrared safety sensors. Mention any recent floor changes at your building in Hampshire so the zones can be set for the new surface.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in Hampshire: guide prices

The visit price is agreed in writing before an engineer attends; parts and any further work are quoted before they are done. Guide price: typically £195 to £495 ex VAT.

Sensor prices cover the part, fitting and set-up. If a sensor is fitted on a visit of its own, the visit charge (from £95 ex VAT) is added, and we confirm the total in writing before an engineer attends. Each sensor is set up for the door and tested before the engineer leaves.

Standards and rules in England

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Tell us what is happening. Describe the fault, or the service or inspection that is due, and send photos of the door and any label on the operator. Include the address in Hampshire and how much the site depends on the door.
  2. Visit price agreed in writing. We confirm the price of the visit in writing before an engineer attends. If the door can be priced from photos and its make and model, we say so at this stage.
  3. Engineer visit. A specialist engineer working under our management diagnoses the fault or carries out the service, then tests the operation of the door and its safety sensors before leaving the site.
  4. Findings and follow-up. You receive a written record of what was found and done. Any parts or further work needed are quoted in writing before they go ahead, and nothing is added without your agreement.

Ask for a price on new safety or activation sensors in Hampshire. Each one is set up for the door's hazard zones and tested before the engineer leaves.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in Hampshire: questions

Can you upgrade sensors on an old door in Hampshire?

Most older doors can take modern sensors. A few very old controllers cannot monitor current safety sensors. If yours is one of them, we explain whether a controller upgrade or a new drive unit is the better option, and quote it, before any work is done.

What price range should I expect for sensor upgrades and replacement in Hampshire?

Our guide is £195 to £495 excluding VAT (per sensor fitted), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Hampshire, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Can you price new sensors for my door in Hampshire from photos?

Often, yes. Photos of the sensor, the door from both sides and the label on the operator cover usually tell us which sensor is needed and whether it suits the controller. We can then quote the sensor and fitting in advance, with the visit price confirmed before anyone travels.

Can a risk assessment in Hampshire tell us which sensors we need?

Yes. A safety inspection tests each hazard zone and records where sensor coverage is missing or poor. The report then lists the sensors or light curtains needed, and we can quote those items exactly as listed, or you can pass the report to another competent installer.

Do you leave a written record after each visit in Hampshire?

Yes. Every visit ends with a written record of what was checked, what was done and anything that still needs attention. For safety inspections you receive a report of the findings and a site-specific risk assessment. Keeping these on file is the usual way to show that a workplace door is maintained and in good working order.

Can visits in Hampshire be arranged outside working hours?

Yes, where the site needs it. Early-morning, evening and weekend visits can be arranged for shops, surgeries and offices that cannot lose their entrance during the day. Any difference in price for out-of-hours attendance is agreed in writing before the visit is booked, alongside the standard visit price.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Hampshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
