Coverage across Derbyshire

Not every part of Derbyshire is easy to reach, and some sites need planning around access, parking or opening hours. We take that into account when arranging automatic swing doors, and the engineer, working under our management, arrives with what the job is likely to need. The towns below, 14 in all, each have their own page, but any address in the area can be covered.

Towns listed in Derbyshire: Derby, Chesterfield, Long Eaton, Ilkeston, Swadlincote, Staveley, Belper, Heanor, Alfreton, Dronfield, Ripley, Buxton, New Mills, Glossop.

What to think about for automatic swing doors in Derbyshire

  • Doors that open into a corridor can strike people approaching from the side. Guard rails or extra sensors may be needed where the swing area meets a busy route.
  • Electric locks must be coordinated with the operator, so the lock releases before the arm moves. Tell us about existing locks, card readers and intercoms at the survey.
  • Toilet and changing room doors used by disabled people may suit a low-energy operator instead. The survey compares the options based on how busy the door is and who uses it.
  • Schools in Derbyshire often prefer installation during half-term or the summer holidays. Operators are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order, so book the survey a few weeks before the break.
  • Check the hinges first. Older doors in Derbyshire often have worn hinges that would fail under an operator, so the survey may recommend heavier hinges or pivots.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Derbyshire and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic swing doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Tell us how many doors you have in Derbyshire, and whether they are single or double, and we will arrange a free survey.

Automatic swing doors in Derbyshire: questions

Do you fit low-energy operators in Derbyshire as well?

Yes. Where a door is quieter and used mainly by people who need help opening it, a low-energy operator may be the better choice, as long as a risk assessment shows it is suitable. We compare full-energy and low-energy at the survey and explain the difference in the quote.

How are prices worked out for automatic swing doors in Derbyshire?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Derbyshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can our existing doors in Derbyshire be automated?

Usually, if the doors, hinges and frames are in good condition. The survey checks the door weight, the hinges, what the operator will fix to and what sits in the swing path. Where a door is too worn, we will say so and quote a new doorset with the operator fitted instead.

How quickly can a swing operator be fitted in Derbyshire?

Operators for existing doors are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. On site, a single door usually takes half a day to a day, and a pair about a day. We can plan work for evenings, weekends or holidays where the building is busy, with any extra cost shown in the quote.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in Derbyshire?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in Derbyshire?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Derbyshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
