What to think about for automatic sliding doors in Derbyshire

  • Wind blowing straight at an entrance can make sliding leaves drag or cause the door to open when nobody is there. On exposed frontages across Derbyshire, a partial opening mode or a draught lobby is worth considering.
  • Schools, libraries and council buildings often prefer installation during holidays or at weekends. That is usually possible, as long as the dates are known when the order is placed and the door can be made in time.
  • Care settings in Derbyshire sometimes need a sliding entrance that visitors can use freely while some residents cannot leave unaccompanied. Keypads and programme modes can be set to follow the home's own care policies.
  • High street entrances with heavy footfall tend to suit bi-parting leaves. They open faster than a single slide for the same clear width, which keeps queues moving at lunchtime and on Saturday afternoons.
  • Where a building in Derbyshire is listed or sits in a conservation area, a new entrance may need consent first. Slim frames, a colour matched to the existing shopfront and careful drawings can all help an application.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Derbyshire and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic sliding doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Automatic sliding doors in Derbyshire: questions

How long will the doorway in Derbyshire be out of action?

For a straightforward replacement, the opening is usually secure again by the end of the first day, with the door fully working by the end of the second. Larger shopfront changes take longer. How the doorway will be kept safe and secure overnight is agreed with you before work starts.

What do you charge for automatic sliding doors in Derbyshire?

Our guide is £4,495 to £12,995 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in Derbyshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you fit a sliding door in Derbyshire outside our opening hours?

Usually, yes. Many shops and surgeries prefer an early start, an evening or a weekend so the entrance stays open during trading. Out-of-hours work is shown as a separate line in the quote, so you can compare it with a weekday installation and choose whichever suits the business better.

Do we need consent for a new entrance in Derbyshire?

It depends on the building. A change to how a shopfront looks may need planning permission, and listed buildings may need listed building consent. Your local planning authority decides. We flag the question at survey and can provide drawings and product details to support an application if one is needed.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in Derbyshire?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in Derbyshire?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

Do businesses in Derbyshire have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
