What to think about for automatic swing doors in Leicestershire

  • Double doors with rebated meeting edges need operators that open and close in sequence. The engineer sets this up so the leaves never clash or leave a gap when closed.
  • Schools in Leicestershire often prefer installation during half-term or the summer holidays. Operators are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order, so book the survey a few weeks before the break.
  • Hospital and care home corridors in Leicestershire need doors that open early enough for beds and trolleys. Radar sensors set to the right range, or a push pad placed before the door, keep traffic moving.
  • Doors on escape routes in Leicestershire usually open in the direction of escape. If the current door opens the other way, the survey will flag whether it should be changed before the operator is fitted.
  • Office buildings in Leicestershire with access control can have doors that open automatically in working hours and only for card holders after hours, using a timer and the existing reader.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Leicestershire and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic swing doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Automatic swing doors in Leicestershire: questions

Can our existing doors in Leicestershire be automated?

Usually, if the doors, hinges and frames are in good condition. The survey checks the door weight, the hinges, what the operator will fix to and what sits in the swing path. Where a door is too worn, we will say so and quote a new doorset with the operator fitted instead.

How are prices worked out for automatic swing doors in Leicestershire?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Leicestershire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

How quickly can a swing operator be fitted in Leicestershire?

Operators for existing doors are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. On site, a single door usually takes half a day to a day, and a pair about a day. We can plan work for evenings, weekends or holidays where the building is busy, with any extra cost shown in the quote.

What paperwork do we get for automated doors in Leicestershire?

You receive the test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for each door. When an existing manual door is motorised, whoever does it may take on the manufacturer's duties for the finished door, so the Declaration of Conformity and instructions are handed over at the end of the job.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in Leicestershire?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in Leicestershire?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Leicestershire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
