What to think about for automatic door refurbishment in County Down

  • Older shopfronts with discontinued door systems may need equivalent parts rather than exact matches. The survey identifies what is still available before anything is ordered.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas can limit changes to how the frame looks. Refurbishment within the existing frame usually avoids those issues and any need for consent.
  • If the operator is close to the end of its life, refurbishing the running gear while fitting a new drive unit saves a second visit and a second set-up.
  • Office blocks and business parks in County Down with several matching doors can refurbish them together for a consistent finish and a lower cost per door.
  • Frames near the coast or busy roads can corrode faster. The survey checks fixings and the bottom of the frame, where water and grit tend to collect.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Northern Ireland machinery, including a new or converted powered door, carries the CE marking (with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment), and the EU Machinery Regulation applies there from 20 January 2027.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for automatic door refurbishment and book a survey in County Down.
  2. Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
  3. Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
  4. Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.

Bring a tired entrance in County Down back to life. Ask for a fixed quote for new glass, rollers, seals or a level threshold, with no obligation.

Automatic door refurbishment in County Down: questions

Is it worth refurbishing an old door at our premises in County Down?

If the frame is sound and the opening size still works, usually yes, as refurbishment costs far less than a new door. If the frame is corroded, the glass is not safety glass or the opening is too narrow, a new door may be better value, and the survey tells you which.

Is there a guide price for automatic door refurbishment in County Down?

Our guide starts from £395 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in County Down confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you refinish the frame of our door in County Down?

Yes. Aluminium frames can be cleaned, repaired and recoated on site to refresh their colour. Badly damaged sections may need replacing rather than refinishing. Refinishing is listed separately in the quote, so you can decide whether to include it now or leave it for a later phase.

Do you refurbish automatic doors in County Down?

Yes. Refurbishment work in County Down is planned and priced by us, then carried out by automatic door engineers and glaziers working under our management. There is no charge for the survey, and you receive a fixed quote with each item priced separately, from new glass and rollers to seals, floor guides, the threshold and frame refinishing.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in County Down?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

What do you need from us for parking and access in County Down?

Somewhere for the engineer's van as close to the entrance as possible, and a clear working area around the door. If parking is restricted, loading rules apply or the site has security procedures, tell us when you book. Those details go into the plan so the visit is not held up on the day.

What do the building regulations in Northern Ireland say about powered doors?

The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 require a powered door to have a means to prevent it trapping anyone and a means to open it if the power fails. Guidance on access is in Technical Booklet R, and new entrances need building control approval.
