What to think about for automatic door refurbishment in County Antrim

  • High street doors in County Antrim often have scratched or etched glass from years of cleaning and graffiti. Replacing leaves with new safety glass restores a clean look.
  • If the operator is close to the end of its life, refurbishing the running gear while fitting a new drive unit saves a second visit and a second set-up.
  • Older shopfronts with discontinued door systems may need equivalent parts rather than exact matches. The survey identifies what is still available before anything is ordered.
  • After refurbishment, sensors and speeds are reset to suit the new parts. Keep the test record with your service history so later engineers can see what was done.
  • Floors around the door in County Antrim may be worn or uneven. New floor guides and thresholds sometimes need small areas of making good, which the quote lists separately.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Northern Ireland machinery, including a new or converted powered door, carries the CE marking (with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment), and the EU Machinery Regulation applies there from 20 January 2027.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automatic door refurbishment for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in County Antrim.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Automatic door refurbishment in County Antrim: questions

Can refurbishment in County Antrim help with draughts and heating costs?

New seals and brush strips, and leaves that close fully, reduce draughts through a closed door. For very exposed entrances, a second set of doors forming a draught lobby may also be worth considering, and we can price both so you can compare the likely benefit.

What do you charge for automatic door refurbishment in County Antrim?

Our guide starts from £395 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in County Antrim confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Is it worth refurbishing an old door at our premises in County Antrim?

If the frame is sound and the opening size still works, usually yes, as refurbishment costs far less than a new door. If the frame is corroded, the glass is not safety glass or the opening is too narrow, a new door may be better value, and the survey tells you which.

Can you replace a single broken glass leaf in County Antrim?

Yes. The leaf is made safe, measured and reglazed with new safety glass, or replaced completely if its frame is damaged. New glass is typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. Once the leaf is rehung, the door is set up again and the track and floor guide are checked.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in County Antrim?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in County Antrim?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Which marking should a new automatic door in County Antrim carry?

In Northern Ireland machinery carries the CE marking, with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment. The EU Machinery Regulation applies in Northern Ireland from 20 January 2027.
