What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in County Down

  • Schools and nurseries need particular attention to finger traps at hinges and beside screens, where small children's hands could easily be caught as the door moves.
  • After upgrades, keep the record with your inspection report. Matching each change to its finding shows the actions have been closed off, which insurers often ask to see.
  • Glass doors need visible markings. Faded manifestation is one of the cheapest findings to fix, and it helps people with visual impairments see the door.
  • Older shopfronts in County Down often have narrow side screens with large gaps beside the sliding leaves. Light curtains or guard screens can protect them without changing the frame.
  • Escape route doors must open, break out or be openable by hand as the fire strategy requires. Check what yours says before choosing which upgrades to make.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Northern Ireland machinery, including a new or converted powered door, carries the CE marking (with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment), and the EU Machinery Regulation applies there from 20 January 2027.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in County Down and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on safety and compliance upgrades separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Safety and compliance upgrades in County Down: questions

Can upgrades in County Down be phased over time?

Yes. Each item is priced separately, so you can start with the high-priority findings and plan the rest for later, often at the next service visit. Your quote shows which items are urgent and which can sensibly wait, so you can budget for each phase.

What price range should I expect for safety and compliance upgrades in County Down?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in County Down confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Will you document the upgrades on our door in County Down?

Yes. You receive a record of what was fitted, the settings and the test results, linked to each finding in the inspection report. Keep it with your service records for insurers, landlords or anyone else who asks how the door's risks have been dealt with.

Do you carry out automatic door safety upgrades in County Down?

Yes. We quote and manage upgrade work in County Down, and the fitting is done by specialist automatic door engineers on our behalf. The survey is free, and each upgrade is priced separately on a fixed, itemised quote. After the work you receive a record of each change and its test results.

Is there a warranty on safety and compliance upgrades?

Yes. The warranty terms for the equipment and the installation are set out in your written quote, so you can see exactly what is covered before you accept. Keeping the door serviced at the recommended intervals helps keep it in good order, and the quote explains any conditions that apply to the warranty.

Will the building stay secure while the entrance is being changed?

We plan to keep the entrance usable or secure throughout. Where a door has to come out, the work is sequenced so the opening is closed up before the engineer leaves, or a temporary door or hoarding is arranged when a longer gap cannot be avoided. How this is handled for your site in County Down is agreed before work starts.

Which accessibility law applies in County Down?

In Northern Ireland the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 applies, because the Equality Act 2010 does not extend there. Service providers and employers are expected to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and an automatic door is a common one at entrances.
