Telescopic sliding doors in Hampshire

Short walls either side of a wide entrance are a common problem in Hampshire, and telescopic sliding doors are often the answer. We arrange a free site survey to measure the opening, show you the clear width a telescopic set would give and send a fixed, itemised quote.

What to think about for telescopic sliding doors in Hampshire

  • Floor guides on two sets of leaves need a level, firm floor. Cracked screed, rocking tiles or a sloping threshold should be put right before fitting, and the quote will say who does it.
  • Hospital and supermarket entrances in Hampshire that run for long hours put more wear on the extra rollers and belts of a telescopic door. Plan a servicing arrangement from the start rather than waiting for the first fault.
  • Grit and leaves blown into the threshold collect in floor guide channels. Entrances facing a car park or open ground benefit from a matwell or canopy, which also keeps rain off the sensors.
  • Entrances across Hampshire that face the prevailing wind can suffer from leaves dragging or sensors reacting to blown debris. A canopy, a draught lobby or careful sensor set-up deals with most of these problems.
  • Measure the widest thing that has to pass through, whether that is a hospital bed, a mobility scooter or a cage of stock. The clear opening of a telescopic door is chosen from that figure, not from the size of the old doorway.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for telescopic sliding doors and book a survey in Hampshire.
  2. Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
  3. Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
  4. Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.

Telescopic sliding doors in Hampshire: questions

Will a telescopic door in Hampshire work with our fire alarm?

It can. The operator can take a signal from the fire alarm panel so the door opens and stays open, or does whatever the fire strategy for the building requires. The panel connection is usually made by your alarm engineer, and the quote shows who is responsible for each part of the work.

What will telescopic sliding doors in Hampshire cost?

Our guide starts from £6,995 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Hampshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

What paperwork do we get after installation in Hampshire?

You receive the commissioning and test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for the door. Keep them with your building records. They are the starting point for later servicing and safety inspections, and they show how the door was set up with reference to BS EN 16005.

How much wider will our entrance in Hampshire be with telescopic doors?

As a rough guide, a telescopic door gives about two-thirds of its overall width as clear opening, against about half for a standard sliding door. On a typical shop or surgery entrance that can mean an extra 300 to 600 mm. The survey drawing for your building in Hampshire shows the exact clear width before you commit.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in Hampshire?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

How do you make sure the door works for disabled visitors in Hampshire?

We look at who uses the entrance: wheelchair users, people with walking aids, parents with buggies and older visitors. That shapes the opening width, the opening speed, the hold-open time and where push pads or sensors go. Service providers and employers have duties to make reasonable adjustments under equality and accessibility law, and an automatic door is a common one.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Hampshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
