There is no branch to visit in the West Midlands; instead, specialist engineers working under our management travel to you. What to think about for frameless glass automatic doors in the West Midlands

  • Listed interiors and heritage buildings in the West Midlands sometimes favour frameless glass because it hides less of the original fabric. Consent may still be needed, so check with the planning authority early.
  • Floor guides need a sound floor. Where the entrance has stone, tiles or polished concrete, agree whether a channel will be cut or a small surface guide fixed, and who makes good the finish.
  • Clear glass is easy to walk into. Plan manifestation at the outset, whether frosted bands or a pattern based on your logo, rather than adding stickers after the door is fitted.
  • Hotels and restaurants in the West Midlands often want the door to stay open on warm days and close in bad weather. A programme switch with hold-open and automatic modes makes that a simple daily choice.
  • Laminated glass is worth considering for ground-floor doors. It stays in place if broken, which keeps the building secure until a replacement leaf can be made.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for frameless glass automatic doors in the West Midlands, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Send us the opening size and a photo of the space in the West Midlands, and we will arrange a free survey for a frameless glass automatic door.

Frameless glass automatic doors in the West Midlands: questions

Do we need building approval for a frameless door in the West Midlands?

Replacing a door like for like does not always need approval, but new entrances and wider building work can. Building regulations guidance on access to buildings applies to new buildings and to building work on existing ones, and the details differ in each UK nation. Your local building control or building standards service can confirm what applies.

Is there a guide price for frameless glass automatic doors in the West Midlands?

Our guide starts from £5,495 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in the West Midlands confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can a frameless door in the West Midlands match our existing glass partitions?

Usually, yes. We can match glass type and thickness, gap sizes and fitting finishes to the partition, working from the fit-out drawings where you have them. The survey checks the partition head and tolerances, so the new door sits in line with the existing glass and the operator is fixed to something solid above.

Can a frameless door in the West Midlands be connected to our access control?

Yes. The operator can be linked to card readers, fob readers, keypads, intercoms or a timer, so the door opens freely in working hours and only for authorised people at other times. Tell us what you already have at the survey and the quote will set out the interface work.

What is the lead time for frameless glass automatic doors in the West Midlands?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in the West Midlands?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in the West Midlands?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
