What to think about for telescopic sliding doors in the West Midlands
- Grit and leaves blown into the threshold collect in floor guide channels. Entrances facing a car park or open ground benefit from a matwell or canopy, which also keeps rain off the sensors.
- If the entrance is on an escape route, ask your fire risk assessor what the door must do before ordering. Break-out telescopic leaves have to be chosen at the start, because they cannot be added afterwards.
- Shop units in the West Midlands that trade late or open early may want installation outside trading hours. Early starts and weekend work can usually be arranged and are shown as a separate line in the quote.
- Care homes and supported living buildings in the West Midlands may want the main door to open freely for visitors but stay locked for some residents. A keypad or fob reader on the inside can be wired to the operator.
- Medical centres in the West Midlands often share a frontage with a pharmacy or other units. Check who owns the shopfront and whether the landlord needs to approve a new entrance before the survey drawing is finalised.

Standards and rules in England
Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.
In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.
Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.
How it works
- Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in the West Midlands and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
- No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
- Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on telescopic sliding doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
- Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.
For beds, trolleys or wheelchairs that need more room at your entrance in the West Midlands, send us the details and we will plan a wider doorway.
Telescopic sliding doors in the West Midlands: questions
Will a telescopic door in the West Midlands work with our fire alarm?
It can. The operator can take a signal from the fire alarm panel so the door opens and stays open, or does whatever the fire strategy for the building requires. The panel connection is usually made by your alarm engineer, and the quote shows who is responsible for each part of the work.
Is there a guide price for telescopic sliding doors in the West Midlands?
Our guide starts from £6,995 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in the West Midlands confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.
Do we need to close our building in the West Midlands while the door is fitted?
Usually not for long. Most telescopic entrances take one to two days on site, and the opening can be secured overnight. Where the entrance is the only way in, we plan the work around your hours, use another entrance if there is one, or work early or at weekends, with any extra cost shown in the quote.
How much wider will our entrance in the West Midlands be with telescopic doors?
As a rough guide, a telescopic door gives about two-thirds of its overall width as clear opening, against about half for a standard sliding door. On a typical shop or surgery entrance that can mean an extra 300 to 600 mm. The survey drawing for your building in the West Midlands shows the exact clear width before you commit.
What does the written quote for telescopic sliding doors in the West Midlands include?
The quote lists each item separately: the door or equipment, installation, electrical connections where we provide them, removal of anything being replaced, testing and handover. It is a fixed price for the work described, so it does not change unless the scope changes, and any change is agreed with you in writing first.
How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in the West Midlands?
Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.
Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in the West Midlands?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
