What to think about for automatic swing doors in Gwent

  • Doors on escape routes in Gwent usually open in the direction of escape. If the current door opens the other way, the survey will flag whether it should be changed before the operator is fitted.
  • Schools in Gwent often prefer installation during half-term or the summer holidays. Operators are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order, so book the survey a few weeks before the break.
  • Hospital and care home corridors in Gwent need doors that open early enough for beds and trolleys. Radar sensors set to the right range, or a push pad placed before the door, keep traffic moving.
  • Fire doors need care. The operator must suit the door, keep its fire performance intact and close the door when the alarm sounds, so have the door's labels and records to hand for the survey.
  • Office buildings in Gwent with access control can have doors that open automatically in working hours and only for card holders after hours, using a timer and the existing reader.

Standards and rules in Wales

Wales has its own building regulations guidance. Approved Document M (Wales) uses a lower opening-force limit than England, 20 N at the leading edge, before a powered door is called for, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers in Wales must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automatic swing doors for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Gwent.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Automatic swing doors in Gwent: questions

What paperwork do we get for automated doors in Gwent?

You receive the test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for each door. When an existing manual door is motorised, whoever does it may take on the manufacturer's duties for the finished door, so the Declaration of Conformity and instructions are handed over at the end of the job.

How are prices worked out for automatic swing doors in Gwent?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Gwent confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

How quickly can a swing operator be fitted in Gwent?

Operators for existing doors are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. On site, a single door usually takes half a day to a day, and a pair about a day. We can plan work for evenings, weekends or holidays where the building is busy, with any extra cost shown in the quote.

Can our existing doors in Gwent be automated?

Usually, if the doors, hinges and frames are in good condition. The survey checks the door weight, the hinges, what the operator will fix to and what sits in the swing path. Where a door is too worn, we will say so and quote a new doorset with the operator fitted instead.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in Gwent?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

What is the lead time for automatic swing doors in Gwent?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

Are the rules for automatic doors different in Wales?

Some are. Wales has its own building regulations guidance: Approved Document M (Wales) calls for a powered door where opening a self-closing entrance door would need more than 20 N, lower than the figure used in England. Fire law (the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005) and the Equality Act 2010 apply as in England.
