What to think about for automatic swing doors in Gloucestershire

  • Doors that open into a corridor can strike people approaching from the side. Guard rails or extra sensors may be needed where the swing area meets a busy route.
  • Hospital and care home corridors in Gloucestershire need doors that open early enough for beds and trolleys. Radar sensors set to the right range, or a push pad placed before the door, keep traffic moving.
  • Office buildings in Gloucestershire with access control can have doors that open automatically in working hours and only for card holders after hours, using a timer and the existing reader.
  • Check the hinges first. Older doors in Gloucestershire often have worn hinges that would fail under an operator, so the survey may recommend heavier hinges or pivots.
  • Toilet and changing room doors used by disabled people may suit a low-energy operator instead. The survey compares the options based on how busy the door is and who uses it.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in Gloucestershire.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

Automatic swing doors in Gloucestershire: questions

Can you service swing doors in Gloucestershire after fitting?

Yes. We can arrange planned servicing, with each visit priced in writing before an engineer attends. A trained engineer should check the safety functions at least once a year, and busy corridors, schools and hospitals usually need more frequent visits. Staff should also carry out simple daily checks.

Is there a guide price for automatic swing doors in Gloucestershire?

Our guide starts from £2,495 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Gloucestershire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

What paperwork do we get for automated doors in Gloucestershire?

You receive the test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for each door. When an existing manual door is motorised, whoever does it may take on the manufacturer's duties for the finished door, so the Declaration of Conformity and instructions are handed over at the end of the job.

Is the survey for swing doors in Gloucestershire free?

Yes, for new operators and doorsets the survey is free and carries no obligation. The engineer looks at each door, its hinges, frame, locks, power and fire labels, and you receive a fixed, itemised written quote for the work. Each door is priced separately, so the work can be phased if needed.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in Gloucestershire?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in Gloucestershire?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Do businesses in Gloucestershire have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
