Coverage across Gwent

Wherever you are in Gwent, we need the same three things to get started on automatic entrance lobbies: a short description of the door, a few photos if you have them, and the address. From there we agree the price in writing and book a specialist engineer working under our management. Every town listed below has a page of its own, 14 in total.

Towns listed in Gwent: Newport, Cwmbran, Pontypool, Ebbw Vale, Caerphilly, Blackwood, Tredegar, Abergavenny, Bargoed, Chepstow, Risca, Abertillery, Monmouth, Caldicot.

What to think about for automatic entrance lobbies in Gwent

  • Plan for a recessed matting well across the lobby floor. Wet shoes on a hard floor are a slip risk, and loose mats can trip people or upset floor-level sensors.
  • Entrances in Gwent that face the prevailing wind lose the most heat and take the most rain. A deeper lobby, or a right-angle layout that turns the inner doors away from the wind, makes the biggest difference there.
  • Two operators mean two power supplies, or one supply sized for both. Check whether there is a suitable supply at ceiling height, as cable runs across a finished foyer add cost.
  • High street units in Gwent often have narrow, shallow shop fronts. An internal lobby may take sales space, so a glazed porch or a sliding outer set with a swing inner set can be a better fit.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in Gwent may limit changes to the frontage. An internal lobby behind the existing doors often keeps the street view unchanged, though consent may still be needed.

Standards and rules in Wales

Wales has its own building regulations guidance. Approved Document M (Wales) uses a lower opening-force limit than England, 20 N at the leading edge, before a powered door is called for, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers in Wales must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Gwent and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic entrance lobbies separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Automatic entrance lobbies in Gwent: questions

How will a lobby cope with the weather in Gwent?

The survey looks at which way the entrance faces and how exposed it is. In windy or wet spots, a deeper lobby, a right-angle layout or doors with stronger seals and wind settings help. A good matting well deals with the water that still comes in on shoes.

What do you charge for automatic entrance lobbies in Gwent?

Our guide is £14,995 to £34,995 excluding VAT (per lobby, doors and screens), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in Gwent confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Do you design lobbies for new buildings in Gwent?

Yes. We can work from the architect's drawings, suggest door types and depth, and quote the doors, screens and controls as one package for the main contractor or the client. Designing the lobby in at the start is usually simpler and cheaper than adding it later.

Can the lobby doors in Gwent be locked at night?

Yes. The outer set is usually locked out of hours, and the inner set can be locked too. Locks and any access control are wired to release on the fire alarm where the fire strategy requires, and the settings are recorded at handover.

Do you service doors in Gwent after installing them?

Yes. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Servicing can follow on from the installation, with the price agreed in writing and a record left after every visit.

Will the building stay secure while the entrance is being changed?

We plan to keep the entrance usable or secure throughout. Where a door has to come out, the work is sequenced so the opening is closed up before the engineer leaves, or a temporary door or hoarding is arranged when a longer gap cannot be avoided. How this is handled for your site in Gwent is agreed before work starts.

Are the rules for automatic doors different in Wales?

Some are. Wales has its own building regulations guidance: Approved Document M (Wales) calls for a powered door where opening a self-closing entrance door would need more than 20 N, lower than the figure used in England. Fire law (the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005) and the Equality Act 2010 apply as in England.
