Covering Stornoway and nearby

Engineers working under our management travel to addresses across the HS1 postcode district for safety inspections and risk assessments. There is no depot or showroom in Stornoway; you arrange everything with us by phone, email or the form on this page, and we confirm the price in writing first.

Work in Stornoway is carried out by arrangement. Visits are planned around ferry timings, so the engineer arrives with the parts and tools the job is likely to need and makes the most of each trip.

What to think about for safety inspections and risk assessments in Stornoway

  • Shared entrances in office blocks and business parks in Stornoway may serve several tenants. Agree who holds the report and who pays for upgrades before booking.
  • Public buildings in Stornoway, such as libraries and leisure centres, often have several doors of different ages. A whole-site inspection puts every door into one ranked report.
  • Glass leaves need safety glazing and visible markings. Faded or missing manifestation is a common finding, and one of the quickest and cheapest to put right.
  • Care homes and hospitals in Stornoway have users who move slowly or unpredictably. The inspection pays close attention to sensor coverage and door speeds where frail or confused people pass through.
  • If the use of a building has changed, for example a unit in Stornoway that has become a clinic or a gym, the door's original set-up may no longer suit its users.

Standards and rules in Scotland

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

How it works

  1. Make contact. Phone, email or use the form. Tell us the type of door, what it is doing and whether it is safe to use, so the right visit for safety inspections and risk assessments can be planned.
  2. Written visit price. The cost of attending is agreed in writing before the visit is booked. For a planned service or inspection, the price per door and what each visit includes are set out at the same time.
  3. On-site work. The engineer, working under our management, checks the door from end to end, deals with the fault or the service, and tests every safety function and sensor setting before signing the door off.
  4. Report and quote. You receive a report of the findings. Where a repair, part or upgrade is recommended, it is quoted in writing so you can decide, and the door is left in a safe state if it cannot be used.

If nobody can find the last risk assessment for the doors at your building in Stornoway, get in touch. We will agree the fee up front and book a visit.

Safety inspections and risk assessments in Stornoway: questions

Do we have to use you for the upgrades the inspection recommends in Stornoway?

No. The report is yours, and any competent installer can carry out the work. If you want us to do it, each upgrade is quoted separately and itemised, so you can phase the work and start with the high-priority items.

How much should I budget for safety inspections and risk assessments in Stornoway?

Our guide is £125 to £250 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Stornoway, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

How often should doors in Stornoway be risk assessed?

There is no set legal frequency. Most owners assess each door once, then repeat the assessment when the door is altered, when the people using it change or after an incident. In between, regular servicing keeps the safety functions checked, which in our view should happen at least once a year.

Can you inspect all the doors on our site in Stornoway in one visit?

Usually, yes. A whole-site inspection covers every automatic door in one visit and one report, with each door's findings ranked so you can compare priorities across the site. Larger sites may need more than one day, which we agree with you when the inspection is priced.

Can visits in Stornoway be arranged outside working hours?

Yes, where the site needs it. Early-morning, evening and weekend visits can be arranged for shops, surgeries and offices that cannot lose their entrance during the day. Any difference in price for out-of-hours attendance is agreed in writing before the visit is booked, alongside the standard visit price.

Are parts quoted before they are fitted?

Always. If a repair or service in Stornoway needs parts, such as rollers, belts, sensors, a control board or a motor, we quote them in writing first. Some common parts may be on the engineer's van; others are ordered once you accept the quote and fitted on a return visit at a price already agreed.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in Stornoway?

The person responsible for fire safety under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 for those premises. Scottish guidance allows automatic doors on escape routes only where they fail safely to outward opening or have a monitored fail-safe system that opens them on power failure, sensor failure and fire alarm.
