Automatic door servicing in Stornoway

A service visit in Stornoway costs far less than a breakdown at the wrong moment. Engineers clean the track, test the safety sensors, check the battery and record the results, then quote for any worn parts before replacing them.

Covering Stornoway and nearby

If your building is in Stornoway, or anywhere in the HS1 postcode district, we can arrange automatic door servicing. Visits are booked with you in advance, timed around opening hours where that matters, and carried out by engineers who work under our management.

Work in Stornoway is carried out by arrangement. Visits are planned around ferry timings, so the engineer arrives with the parts and tools the job is likely to need and makes the most of each trip.

What to think about for automatic door servicing in Stornoway

  • Older doors in Stornoway may need parts replaced more often as they age. A service history that tracks wear helps you budget for repairs or a new drive unit before a breakdown.
  • If several buildings share one maintenance budget, a single contract with one price per door and one set of records is easier to manage than booking visits separately.
  • Battery backup units wear out over time. Testing them at each service shows whether the door will still open or close safely in a power cut.
  • Doors on escape routes need their break-out or power-failure opening tested at every service. Tell us which doors serve escape routes so the engineer checks the right functions.
  • Business parks and retail parks in Stornoway may have doors owned by the landlord and doors leased with the unit. Check who is responsible for servicing each door before booking.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend a safety check by a trained engineer at least once a year, and more frequent visits for busy doors. Repairs found during a service are quoted before they are done.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Explain the problem. Whether the door is stuck, slow, noisy or due its next check, a short description and a few photos tell us which kind of visit to book for automatic door servicing and what to bring.
  2. Visit cost agreed. You get the visit price in writing before we book the engineer. There are no hidden extras: parts and further work are always quoted separately and in advance.
  3. Engineer on site. The engineer inspects the operator, sensors, tracks and leaves, carries out the repair or service, and runs the door through its safety tests before it goes back into use.
  4. Follow-up quoted. You are sent a record of the visit. If something else needs attention, we quote it in writing; for doors on a service plan, the next visit date is noted on the record.

Automatic door servicing in Stornoway: questions

Will servicing help with our insurer or landlord in Stornoway?

Many insurers and landlords ask for evidence that automatic doors are maintained. A written service report for each door, kept in a logbook or digital folder, is the usual way to show that. If they ask for a risk assessment against BS EN 16005, a safety inspection can be added.

Can you give me a price for automatic door servicing in Stornoway?

Our guide starts from £145 excluding VAT (per visit, first door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £174 including VAT. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Stornoway, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

What happens if the service in Stornoway finds a fault?

The engineer explains what they found and deals with small issues as part of the visit. Worn parts or longer repairs are quoted to you first and only carried out once you agree. The service report records the fault so it can be tracked at later visits.

Do you service doors in Stornoway that another company installed?

Yes. We service most powered pedestrian doors, whoever fitted them. The first visit records each door's make, model, condition and any concerns, so later reports can be compared. If parts are no longer made for one of your doors, we let you know early so a replacement can be planned.

Do you offer service contracts in Stornoway?

Yes. A service contract sets out how many visits a year each door receives, what each visit includes and the price, all agreed in writing before you sign. Contracts suit sites with several doors or busy entrances, because visits are planned ahead and the records stay in one place. Contract length and notice terms are shown in the agreement.

Which makes of automatic door can you work on in Stornoway?

Engineers working under our management work on most makes of automatic door, including sliding, swing, folding, telescopic and revolving types. Some older or obsolete operators have limited parts availability. If that applies, we explain the options, which may include a replacement drive unit on the existing frame, and quote them before anything is ordered.

Can a home in Stornoway get help paying for a door opener?

Scotland does not have Disabled Facilities Grants. Councils help through their Scheme of Assistance, which can include a grant for essential permanent adaptations. Ask your council whether a powered door opener could be included.
