Covering Armagh and nearby

Homes, businesses and public buildings throughout the BT60 and BT61 postcode districts can arrange safety inspections and risk assessments with us. We are the contracting party and organise every visit; the engineer, who works under our management, travels in to Armagh for the job rather than working from premises in town.

Many buildings in Armagh are older, with timber frames, thick walls, steps or uneven thresholds. These affect where an operator and sensors can go, and the engineer checks them on site before anything is fitted or adjusted.

Nearby towns we also list for safety inspections and risk assessments (straight-line distance): Portadown (10.3 miles), Dungannon (11.3 miles), Craigavon (13.1 miles), Banbridge (15.4 miles), Lurgan (15.6 miles), Newry (17.8 miles).

What to think about for safety inspections and risk assessments in Armagh

  • Insurers sometimes ask for inspection reports at renewal. Booking the inspection well before the renewal date gives you time to act on any high-priority findings first.
  • Glass leaves need safety glazing and visible markings. Faded or missing manifestation is a common finding, and one of the quickest and cheapest to put right.
  • Schools and nurseries need particular care with finger traps at hinges and beside side screens, because children are more likely to put their hands into gaps.
  • Doors on escape routes must let people out safely during a fire or evacuation. The inspection checks break-out, power-failure opening or manual release, as the fire strategy requires.
  • Programme switches left in the wrong mode cause many incidents. The inspection checks the switch is secure, labelled and set correctly for each time of day.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1993) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. How often a door is maintained should follow the manufacturer’s information and how heavily it is used.

How it works

  1. Explain the problem. Whether the door is stuck, slow, noisy or due its next check, a short description and a few photos tell us which kind of visit to book for safety inspections and risk assessments and what to bring.
  2. Visit cost agreed. You get the visit price in writing before we book the engineer. There are no hidden extras: parts and further work are always quoted separately and in advance.
  3. Engineer on site. The engineer inspects the operator, sensors, tracks and leaves, carries out the repair or service, and runs the door through its safety tests before it goes back into use.
  4. Follow-up quoted. You are sent a record of the visit. If something else needs attention, we quote it in writing; for doors on a service plan, the next visit date is noted on the record.

Book an automatic door safety inspection in Armagh. Tell us how many doors you have and how they are used, and we will confirm the price in writing.

Safety inspections and risk assessments in Armagh: questions

Our insurer in Armagh has asked for a risk assessment. Is this what they mean?

Most likely. Insurers usually want a documented, site-specific risk assessment of the door by a competent person, along with service records. Check their exact wording and send it to us. Our report covers the door's hazard zones, test results and recommended actions, which is what most insurers expect to see.

What price range should I expect for safety inspections and risk assessments in Armagh?

Our guide is £125 to £250 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Armagh, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Can an inspection in Armagh be combined with a service?

Yes, and it often makes sense. The engineer services the door, then carries out the risk assessment while on site, which saves a second visit. The combined price is agreed in writing before the visit, and you receive both the service record and the inspection report.

Can you inspect all the doors on our site in Armagh in one visit?

Usually, yes. A whole-site inspection covers every automatic door in one visit and one report, with each door's findings ranked so you can compare priorities across the site. Larger sites may need more than one day, which we agree with you when the inspection is priced.

Are parts quoted before they are fitted?

Always. If a repair or service in Armagh needs parts, such as rollers, belts, sensors, a control board or a motor, we quote them in writing first. Some common parts may be on the engineer's van; others are ordered once you accept the quote and fitted on a return visit at a price already agreed.

Which makes of automatic door can you work on in Armagh?

Engineers working under our management work on most makes of automatic door, including sliding, swing, folding, telescopic and revolving types. Some older or obsolete operators have limited parts availability. If that applies, we explain the options, which may include a replacement drive unit on the existing frame, and quote them before anything is ordered.

What do the building regulations in Northern Ireland say about powered doors?

The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 require a powered door to have a means to prevent it trapping anyone and a means to open it if the power fails. Guidance on access is in Technical Booklet R, and new entrances need building control approval.
