What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in Tyne and Wear

  • Programme switches within reach of the public in Tyne and Wear should be key-operated or protected, so the door cannot be left in an unsafe mode by mistake.
  • Doors serving care homes and hospitals in Tyne and Wear may need wider safety zones and gentler closing speeds for residents and patients who move slowly or need help.
  • After upgrades, keep the record with your inspection report. Matching each change to its finding shows the actions have been closed off, which insurers often ask to see.
  • Busy retail and public buildings in Tyne and Wear may prefer upgrade work out of hours. Most single-door upgrades are completed in one visit, so disruption is limited.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in Tyne and Wear may limit visible changes. Slim sensors and discreet guards keep the look of the historic entrance largely unchanged.

Standards and rules in England

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in Tyne and Wear.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

Safety and compliance upgrades in Tyne and Wear: questions

Can you quote from our existing inspection report in Tyne and Wear?

Yes. Send us the report and we will price each recommended action. If the door has changed since the report was written, or a finding is unclear, the engineer checks it on the free survey before the quote is finalised, so you only pay for what the door needs.

Can you give me a price for safety and compliance upgrades in Tyne and Wear?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Tyne and Wear confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Is it cheaper to upgrade or replace our old door in Tyne and Wear?

Upgrading is usually cheaper when the door and operator are sound. If the operator is old and several upgrades are needed, a new drive unit with new sensors may be better value overall. The survey compares the options, and the quote can show both so you can decide.

Do you need an inspection before upgrading a door in Tyne and Wear?

Not always. If you know what you need, such as a key switch or new signs, we can survey and quote for it directly. For a full picture of the door's risks, a documented safety inspection is the better starting point, and it is a separate service priced before the visit.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in Tyne and Wear?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

How do you make sure the door works for disabled visitors in Tyne and Wear?

We look at who uses the entrance: wheelchair users, people with walking aids, parents with buggies and older visitors. That shapes the opening width, the opening speed, the hold-open time and where push pads or sensors go. Service providers and employers have duties to make reasonable adjustments under equality and accessibility law, and an automatic door is a common one.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in Tyne and Wear?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
