Coverage across Suffolk

We treat Suffolk as one service area for safety and compliance upgrades, so a site on the edge of the area gets the same written pricing and the same standard of work as one in the busiest town centre. What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in Suffolk

  • Shared entrances in office blocks need agreement on who pays for upgrades. The inspection report helps landlords and tenants agree the scope before work is ordered.
  • Older shopfronts in Suffolk often have narrow side screens with large gaps beside the sliding leaves. Light curtains or guard screens can protect them without changing the frame.
  • Glass doors need visible markings. Faded manifestation is one of the cheapest findings to fix, and it helps people with visual impairments see the door.
  • After upgrades, keep the record with your inspection report. Matching each change to its finding shows the actions have been closed off, which insurers often ask to see.
  • Escape route doors must open, break out or be openable by hand as the fire strategy requires. Check what yours says before choosing which upgrades to make.

Standards and rules in England

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in Suffolk and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on safety and compliance upgrades separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Safety and compliance upgrades in Suffolk: questions

Will you document the upgrades on our door in Suffolk?

Yes. You receive a record of what was fitted, the settings and the test results, linked to each finding in the inspection report. Keep it with your service records for insurers, landlords or anyone else who asks how the door's risks have been dealt with.

Is there a guide price for safety and compliance upgrades in Suffolk?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Suffolk confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Our door in Suffolk has no battery backup. Do we need one?

It depends on whether the door is on an escape route and what the fire strategy for the building requires. Doors on escape routes usually need to open, break out or be openable by hand if the power fails. The person responsible for fire safety in the building should confirm the requirement.

Is it cheaper to upgrade or replace our old door in Suffolk?

Upgrading is usually cheaper when the door and operator are sound. If the operator is old and several upgrades are needed, a new drive unit with new sensors may be better value overall. The survey compares the options, and the quote can show both so you can decide.

What do you need from us for parking and access in Suffolk?

Somewhere for the engineer's van as close to the entrance as possible, and a clear working area around the door. If parking is restricted, loading rules apply or the site has security procedures, tell us when you book. Those details go into the plan so the visit is not held up on the day.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in Suffolk?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in Suffolk?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
