Coverage across Hertfordshire

We treat Hertfordshire as one service area for safety and compliance upgrades, so a site on the edge of the area gets the same written pricing and the same standard of work as one in the busiest town centre. Specialist automatic door engineers working under our management carry out each visit. Choose from the 19 towns below, or contact us with any address.

What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in Hertfordshire

  • Very old controllers may not support modern monitored sensors. In that case a new drive unit with sensors can cost less than several separate upgrades.
  • After upgrades, keep the record with your inspection report. Matching each change to its finding shows the actions have been closed off, which insurers often ask to see.
  • Shared entrances in office blocks need agreement on who pays for upgrades. The inspection report helps landlords and tenants agree the scope before work is ordered.
  • Schools and nurseries need particular attention to finger traps at hinges and beside screens, where small children's hands could easily be caught as the door moves.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in Hertfordshire may limit visible changes. Slim sensors and discreet guards keep the look of the historic entrance largely unchanged.

Standards and rules in England

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in Hertfordshire.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

Safety and compliance upgrades in Hertfordshire: questions

Our door in Hertfordshire has no battery backup. Do we need one?

It depends on whether the door is on an escape route and what the fire strategy for the building requires. Doors on escape routes usually need to open, break out or be openable by hand if the power fails. The person responsible for fire safety in the building should confirm the requirement.

Is there a guide price for safety and compliance upgrades in Hertfordshire?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Hertfordshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Do you carry out automatic door safety upgrades in Hertfordshire?

Yes. We quote and manage upgrade work in Hertfordshire, and the fitting is done by specialist automatic door engineers on our behalf. The survey is free, and each upgrade is priced separately on a fixed, itemised quote. After the work you receive a record of each change and its test results.

Do you need an inspection before upgrading a door in Hertfordshire?

Not always. If you know what you need, such as a key switch or new signs, we can survey and quote for it directly. For a full picture of the door's risks, a documented safety inspection is the better starting point, and it is a separate service priced before the visit.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in Hertfordshire?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

What do you need from us for parking and access in Hertfordshire?

Somewhere for the engineer's van as close to the entrance as possible, and a clear working area around the door. If parking is restricted, loading rules apply or the site has security procedures, tell us when you book. Those details go into the plan so the visit is not held up on the day.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Hertfordshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
