What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in East Sussex

  • Schools and nurseries need particular attention to finger traps at hinges and beside screens, where small children's hands could easily be caught as the door moves.
  • If your building in East Sussex has one main entrance, battery backup lets the door open safely in a power cut, so there is always a way in and out.
  • Escape route doors must open, break out or be openable by hand as the fire strategy requires. Check what yours says before choosing which upgrades to make.
  • Glass doors need visible markings. Faded manifestation is one of the cheapest findings to fix, and it helps people with visual impairments see the door.
  • Shared entrances in office blocks need agreement on who pays for upgrades. The inspection report helps landlords and tenants agree the scope before work is ordered.

Standards and rules in England

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in East Sussex and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on safety and compliance upgrades separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Safety and compliance upgrades in East Sussex: questions

Is it cheaper to upgrade or replace our old door in East Sussex?

Upgrading is usually cheaper when the door and operator are sound. If the operator is old and several upgrades are needed, a new drive unit with new sensors may be better value overall. The survey compares the options, and the quote can show both so you can decide.

What price range should I expect for safety and compliance upgrades in East Sussex?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in East Sussex confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you quote from our existing inspection report in East Sussex?

Yes. Send us the report and we will price each recommended action. If the door has changed since the report was written, or a finding is unclear, the engineer checks it on the free survey before the quote is finalised, so you only pay for what the door needs.

Can upgrades in East Sussex be phased over time?

Yes. Each item is priced separately, so you can start with the high-priority findings and plan the rest for later, often at the next service visit. Your quote shows which items are urgent and which can sensibly wait, so you can budget for each phase.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in East Sussex?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in East Sussex?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in East Sussex?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
