Covering Exeter and nearby

Schools and colleges in and around Exeter often want work done in the holidays, when entrances can be taken out of use without disrupting pupils. Planning ahead for half-term or summer dates makes it easier to find a slot that suits the timetable.

What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in Exeter

  • Busy retail and public buildings in Exeter may prefer upgrade work out of hours. Most single-door upgrades are completed in one visit, so disruption is limited.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in Exeter may limit visible changes. Slim sensors and discreet guards keep the look of the historic entrance largely unchanged.
  • Schools and nurseries need particular attention to finger traps at hinges and beside screens, where small children's hands could easily be caught as the door moves.
  • After upgrades, keep the record with your inspection report. Matching each change to its finding shows the actions have been closed off, which insurers often ask to see.
  • If your building in Exeter has one main entrance, battery backup lets the door open safely in a power cut, so there is always a way in and out.

Standards and rules in England

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is safety and compliance upgrades for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Exeter.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Keep an older door in safe use. Arrange a free survey in Exeter and receive a quote that lists every upgrade on its own line.

Safety and compliance upgrades in Exeter: questions

Is it cheaper to upgrade or replace our old door in Exeter?

Upgrading is usually cheaper when the door and operator are sound. If the operator is old and several upgrades are needed, a new drive unit with new sensors may be better value overall. The survey compares the options, and the quote can show both so you can decide.

What will safety and compliance upgrades in Exeter cost?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Exeter confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can upgrades in Exeter be phased over time?

Yes. Each item is priced separately, so you can start with the high-priority findings and plan the rest for later, often at the next service visit. Your quote shows which items are urgent and which can sensibly wait, so you can budget for each phase.

Our door in Exeter has no battery backup. Do we need one?

It depends on whether the door is on an escape route and what the fire strategy for the building requires. Doors on escape routes usually need to open, break out or be openable by hand if the power fails. The person responsible for fire safety in the building should confirm the requirement.

What power supply is needed for safety and compliance upgrades in Exeter?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

What does the free site survey in Exeter involve?

An engineer working under our management visits the building, measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power supply, and looks at how people use the entrance. The survey is free and carries no obligation. Afterwards you receive a fixed, itemised written quote for safety and compliance upgrades, with drawings where the door type needs them.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in Exeter?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
