Automatic sliding doors on the Isle of Wight

Replacing a worn manual door with a powered sliding entrance is one of the most common jobs we arrange on the Isle of Wight. The new door is made to your measured opening, fitted with sensors and a programme switch, and handed over with a test record and risk assessment for your files.

Coverage across the Isle of Wight

Enquiries about automatic sliding doors come to us from right across the Isle of Wight, and each one is handled the same way. Specialist automatic door engineers working under our management travel to the address, and we remain your contracting party throughout. The 4 towns we list below are a starting point, not a boundary: villages, business parks and rural sites in between are covered as well.

Towns listed on the Isle of Wight: Newport, Ryde, Cowes, Sandown.

What to think about for automatic sliding doors on the Isle of Wight

  • Power is needed near the head of the door, usually from a fused spur. If there is no supply nearby, allow for an electrician to run one before the fitting day so the door can be commissioned straight away.
  • A sloping pavement or uneven threshold in front of a door on the Isle of Wight can stop floor guides working properly. The survey records floor levels, so any levelling is included in the quote rather than discovered on the day.
  • Care settings on the Isle of Wight sometimes need a sliding entrance that visitors can use freely while some residents cannot leave unaccompanied. Keypads and programme modes can be set to follow the home's own care policies.
  • Shops that use a roller shutter at night need the new header to sit below the shutter box and clear of its guide channels. Both are measured at survey so the door and shutter can work together.
  • Entrances on the Isle of Wight that sit on an escape route need the fire strategy checked before the door is designed, because that decides whether break-out leaves, alarm-linked opening or battery opening are required.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address on the Isle of Wight and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on automatic sliding doors separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Send us a photo of the doorway and its postcode, and we will arrange a free site survey on the Isle of Wight and a fixed, itemised quote for a new sliding entrance.

Automatic sliding doors on the Isle of Wight: questions

Who checks that a new sliding door on the Isle of Wight is safe?

The installing engineer sets the speeds, forces and sensor zones, tests the door and completes a site-specific risk assessment before handing it over. You keep the test record and the risk assessment for your own files, and they form the baseline for every service visit and inspection after that.

How are prices worked out for automatic sliding doors on the Isle of Wight?

Our guide is £4,495 to £12,995 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey on the Isle of Wight confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

How long will the doorway on the Isle of Wight be out of action?

For a straightforward replacement, the opening is usually secure again by the end of the first day, with the door fully working by the end of the second. Larger shopfront changes take longer. How the doorway will be kept safe and secure overnight is agreed with you before work starts.

Will a new sliding door on the Isle of Wight work with our alarm and access control?

In most cases, yes. The operator can take signals from a fire alarm panel, a card reader, a keypad, an intercom or a timer. Tell us what you have at the survey, and the quote will show the interface work and who is responsible for each connection, whether that is us, your electrician or your alarm company.

Is there a warranty on automatic sliding doors?

Yes. The warranty terms for the equipment and the installation are set out in your written quote, so you can see exactly what is covered before you accept. Keeping the door serviced at the recommended intervals helps keep it in good order, and the quote explains any conditions that apply to the warranty.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work on the Isle of Wight?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Do businesses on the Isle of Wight have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
