What to think about for automatic internal doors in the Bristol area

  • Schools and colleges in the Bristol area often prefer corridor work in the holidays. Book the survey early in the term before, so doors and operators can be ordered and delivered in time.
  • Infection control rules may set what materials and controls can be used. Wipe-clean surfaces and sealed switches that stand up to cleaning products are worth specifying.
  • Doors linked to the fire alarm need a signal from the alarm panel. Allow time for your fire alarm contractor to provide the connection and test it with us.
  • Care homes in the Bristol area often have residents with dementia. Think about which doors should open freely and which should be controlled, and agree that as a care decision before choosing controls.
  • Measure what passes through the door, not just the door. Beds, hoists, trolleys and catering equipment can need a wider opening than the current door gives.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in the Bristol area.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

Automatic internal doors in the Bristol area: questions

Can our cross-corridor fire doors in the Bristol area be held open?

Yes, using hold-open devices or fire-rated operators linked to the fire alarm, so the doors close when the alarm operates. We check the doors' condition and ratings first. Any change to how fire doors behave should be agreed with whoever holds your fire risk assessment.

How much should I budget for automatic internal doors in the Bristol area?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in the Bristol area confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you automate the corridor doors in our care home in the Bristol area?

Yes. We survey each door, including its fire rating, hinges, frame and power, and quote a fixed price. Doors can be set to open gently and slowly, with extra safety sensors where residents are frail. Work is planned around your care routines and agreed with the home manager.

Do you work in hospitals in the Bristol area?

Yes. We work to the estates team's requirements for door widths, controls, infection control and fire alarm interfaces, and provide method statements, insurance details and the documents they ask for. Work on wards is usually planned out of hours or in phases.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in the Bristol area?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

What is the lead time for automatic internal doors in the Bristol area?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in the Bristol area?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
