Coverage across the Bristol area

Not every part of the Bristol area is easy to reach, and some sites need planning around access, parking or opening hours. We take that into account when arranging accessible door operators, and the engineer, working under our management, arrives with what the job is likely to need. The towns below, 4 in all, each have their own page, but any address in the area can be covered.

What to think about for accessible door operators in the Bristol area

  • Place push pads where a wheelchair user can reach them without the door swinging into them. That often means mounting a pad on a post or a side wall rather than on the frame.
  • Offices and shared buildings in the Bristol area often have doors used by both staff and visitors. Power assist for everyday use, with a push pad for those who need full opening, keeps the door easy for everyone.
  • Check how heavy the door is to push now. If the closer is set very strong for fire or wind reasons, the operator has to be chosen to suit, and the closer may need adjusting.
  • Power is usually taken from a fused spur near the head of the door. If there is no supply close by, allow for an electrician to run one, ideally hidden in trunking or the wall.
  • If the door is a fire door, find its rating or records before the survey. Fixings and cabling must respect the rating, and the operator must release the door on the fire alarm.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in the Bristol area.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

From one toilet door to a whole accessible route, ask for a fixed price for accessible door operators in the Bristol area. The survey is free.

Accessible door operators in the Bristol area: questions

Our building in the Bristol area is listed. Can we still have an operator?

Often, yes. Low-energy operators are compact and can sometimes be mounted on the inside face, with cabling hidden. Listed building consent may still be needed for fixings or new switches, so check with the planning authority. We can supply product details for an application.

What will accessible door operators in the Bristol area cost?

Our guide is £1,795 to £2,995 excluding VAT (per single door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in the Bristol area confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you fit an accessible operator to a door at our surgery in the Bristol area?

Yes, in most cases. We check the door, hinges, frame and the wall above at a free survey, then quote a fixed price for the operator, push pads and any repairs needed first. Fitting usually takes half a day to a day per door, planned around your opening hours.

Who will fit the operator at our building in the Bristol area?

The engineer will be a specialist working under our management. We are the contracting party, so the quote, the warranty terms and any follow-up all come through us. Before handover, the door is set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005.

What power supply is needed for accessible door operators in the Bristol area?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

What is the lead time for accessible door operators in the Bristol area?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in the Bristol area?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
