Coverage across the Edinburgh area

Not every part of the Edinburgh area is easy to reach, and some sites need planning around access, parking or opening hours. We take that into account when arranging automatic door refurbishment, and the engineer, working under our management, arrives with what the job is likely to need. The towns below, 3 in all, each have their own page, but any address in the area can be covered.

Towns listed in the Edinburgh area: Edinburgh, South Queensferry, Currie.

What to think about for automatic door refurbishment in the Edinburgh area

  • High street doors in the Edinburgh area often have scratched or etched glass from years of cleaning and graffiti. Replacing leaves with new safety glass restores a clean look.
  • Busy retail units in the Edinburgh area may prefer the work done in stages, one leaf at a time, so the entrance stays open throughout trading hours.
  • Frames near the coast or busy roads can corrode faster. The survey checks fixings and the bottom of the frame, where water and grit tend to collect.
  • After refurbishment, sensors and speeds are reset to suit the new parts. Keep the test record with your service history so later engineers can see what was done.
  • If the operator is close to the end of its life, refurbishing the running gear while fitting a new drive unit saves a second visit and a second set-up.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in the Edinburgh area.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

Automatic door refurbishment in the Edinburgh area: questions

Can refurbishment in the Edinburgh area help with draughts and heating costs?

New seals and brush strips, and leaves that close fully, reduce draughts through a closed door. For very exposed entrances, a second set of doors forming a draught lobby may also be worth considering, and we can price both so you can compare the likely benefit.

What will automatic door refurbishment in the Edinburgh area cost?

Our guide starts from £395 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in the Edinburgh area confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you refinish the frame of our door in the Edinburgh area?

Yes. Aluminium frames can be cleaned, repaired and recoated on site to refresh their colour. Badly damaged sections may need replacing rather than refinishing. Refinishing is listed separately in the quote, so you can decide whether to include it now or leave it for a later phase.

Can you replace a single broken glass leaf in the Edinburgh area?

Yes. The leaf is made safe, measured and reglazed with new safety glass, or replaced completely if its frame is damaged. New glass is typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. Once the leaf is rehung, the door is set up again and the track and floor guide are checked.

What happens once the installation in the Edinburgh area is finished?

The engineer tests every function, including the safety sensors and the behaviour on power loss, and sets the door up with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown how to use the controls and which simple checks to make, and you receive the handover documents, including the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

What power supply is needed for automatic door refurbishment in the Edinburgh area?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in the Edinburgh area?

The person responsible for fire safety under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 for those premises. Scottish guidance allows automatic doors on escape routes only where they fail safely to outward opening or have a monitored fail-safe system that opens them on power failure, sensor failure and fire alarm.
