What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in the Edinburgh area

  • Very old controllers may not support modern monitored sensors. In that case a new drive unit with sensors can cost less than several separate upgrades.
  • Doors serving care homes and hospitals in the Edinburgh area may need wider safety zones and gentler closing speeds for residents and patients who move slowly or need help.
  • Busy retail and public buildings in the Edinburgh area may prefer upgrade work out of hours. Most single-door upgrades are completed in one visit, so disruption is limited.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in the Edinburgh area may limit visible changes. Slim sensors and discreet guards keep the look of the historic entrance largely unchanged.
  • If your building in the Edinburgh area has one main entrance, battery backup lets the door open safely in a power cut, so there is always a way in and out.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Send photos and the address. A few pictures of the door from both sides, the address in the Edinburgh area and a note of who uses the entrance help us understand the job before anyone visits the site.
  2. No-cost survey on site. We arrange a survey at a time that suits the building. The engineer records measurements, fixings and power, plus any constraints such as listed status, opening hours or access for deliveries.
  3. Itemised quote to approve. We price every element of the work on safety and compliance upgrades separately in a written quote that you can check, share and approve. Lead time and payment stages are stated, and nothing is ordered until you accept.
  4. Fit, test and hand over. On the agreed dates the engineer installs the equipment, commissions the operator and tests each safety function. You get a demonstration, the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

Safety and compliance upgrades in the Edinburgh area: questions

Do you carry out automatic door safety upgrades in the Edinburgh area?

Yes. We quote and manage upgrade work in the Edinburgh area, and the fitting is done by specialist automatic door engineers on our behalf. The survey is free, and each upgrade is priced separately on a fixed, itemised quote. After the work you receive a record of each change and its test results.

Can you give me a price for safety and compliance upgrades in the Edinburgh area?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in the Edinburgh area confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Our door in the Edinburgh area has no battery backup. Do we need one?

It depends on whether the door is on an escape route and what the fire strategy for the building requires. Doors on escape routes usually need to open, break out or be openable by hand if the power fails. The person responsible for fire safety in the building should confirm the requirement.

Do you need an inspection before upgrading a door in the Edinburgh area?

Not always. If you know what you need, such as a key switch or new signs, we can survey and quote for it directly. For a full picture of the door's risks, a documented safety inspection is the better starting point, and it is a separate service priced before the visit.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in the Edinburgh area?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

What is the lead time for safety and compliance upgrades in the Edinburgh area?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

Do businesses in the Edinburgh area have to fit automatic doors?

No law requires automatic doors everywhere. Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and Scottish guidance says powered doors improve accessibility at entrances. An automatic door is often the practical answer.
