What to think about for automatic door refurbishment in Dumfries and Galloway
- Frames near the coast or busy roads can corrode faster. The survey checks fixings and the bottom of the frame, where water and grit tend to collect.
- High street doors in Dumfries and Galloway often have scratched or etched glass from years of cleaning and graffiti. Replacing leaves with new safety glass restores a clean look.
- Listed buildings and conservation areas can limit changes to how the frame looks. Refurbishment within the existing frame usually avoids those issues and any need for consent.
- If the operator is close to the end of its life, refurbishing the running gear while fitting a new drive unit saves a second visit and a second set-up.
- Office blocks and business parks in Dumfries and Galloway with several matching doors can refurbish them together for a consistent finish and a lower cost per door.

Standards and rules in Scotland
Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.
Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.
Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.
How it works
- Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for automatic door refurbishment and book a survey in Dumfries and Galloway.
- Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
- Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
- Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.
Before replacing an automatic door in Dumfries and Galloway, ask us to price refurbishment. The survey is free and shows exactly what is worth keeping.
Automatic door refurbishment in Dumfries and Galloway: questions
Can you replace a single broken glass leaf in Dumfries and Galloway?
Yes. The leaf is made safe, measured and reglazed with new safety glass, or replaced completely if its frame is damaged. New glass is typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. Once the leaf is rehung, the door is set up again and the track and floor guide are checked.
Can you give me a price for automatic door refurbishment in Dumfries and Galloway?
Our guide starts from £395 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Dumfries and Galloway confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.
Can you refinish the frame of our door in Dumfries and Galloway?
Yes. Aluminium frames can be cleaned, repaired and recoated on site to refresh their colour. Badly damaged sections may need replacing rather than refinishing. Refinishing is listed separately in the quote, so you can decide whether to include it now or leave it for a later phase.
Can you refurbish a door in Dumfries and Galloway that another company installed?
Yes. We refurbish doors whoever fitted them. The survey identifies the door system, and matching or equivalent rollers, guides, seals and glass are then sourced for it. If a part is no longer made, the quote explains the alternative.
Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in Dumfries and Galloway?
Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.
How are payments structured for work in Dumfries and Galloway?
Payment stages are set out in the quote before you accept it. Larger or made-to-order jobs may involve a deposit and a balance on completion, while smaller jobs may be invoiced once the work is finished. Nothing is charged for the survey itself, and the terms you accept are the terms that apply.
Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in Dumfries and Galloway?
The person responsible for fire safety under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 for those premises. Scottish guidance allows automatic doors on escape routes only where they fail safely to outward opening or have a monitored fail-safe system that opens them on power failure, sensor failure and fire alarm.
