What to think about for automatic door refurbishment in Ayrshire

  • Glass and made-to-measure leaves are typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. Plan the work around that lead time, especially if a damaged leaf is temporarily boarded.
  • Busy retail units in Ayrshire may prefer the work done in stages, one leaf at a time, so the entrance stays open throughout trading hours.
  • Frames near the coast or busy roads can corrode faster. The survey checks fixings and the bottom of the frame, where water and grit tend to collect.
  • If the operator is close to the end of its life, refurbishing the running gear while fitting a new drive unit saves a second visit and a second set-up.
  • Exposed entrances in Ayrshire suffer most from worn seals and brush strips. New weatherproofing can cut draughts and noise noticeably, especially on doors facing the prevailing wind.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automatic door refurbishment for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Ayrshire.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Automatic door refurbishment in Ayrshire: questions

Can you replace a single broken glass leaf in Ayrshire?

Yes. The leaf is made safe, measured and reglazed with new safety glass, or replaced completely if its frame is damaged. New glass is typically 2 to 4 weeks from order. Once the leaf is rehung, the door is set up again and the track and floor guide are checked.

How much should I budget for automatic door refurbishment in Ayrshire?

Our guide starts from £395 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Ayrshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Is it worth refurbishing an old door at our premises in Ayrshire?

If the frame is sound and the opening size still works, usually yes, as refurbishment costs far less than a new door. If the frame is corroded, the glass is not safety glass or the opening is too narrow, a new door may be better value, and the survey tells you which.

Will our entrance in Ayrshire stay open during refurbishment?

Often, at least in part. Many jobs can be done one leaf at a time, and the work can be planned for quieter hours. If the entrance does need to close, the quote says for how long, so you can arrange another way in for staff and visitors.

Do you service doors in Ayrshire after installing them?

Yes. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Servicing can follow on from the installation, with the price agreed in writing and a record left after every visit.

Can installation in Ayrshire happen outside opening hours?

Yes. Many shops, surgeries and offices prefer work early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends, when the entrance is quietest. Tell us your constraints when you enquire and they are built into the plan. Any extra cost for out-of-hours work is shown in the written quote rather than added afterwards.

Is a building warrant needed for a new automatic entrance in Ayrshire?

Often, yes. Most building work in Scotland needs a building warrant before it starts, and the non-domestic Technical Handbook sets out what an accessible entrance should provide, including a clear opening of at least 800 mm. We tell you at the survey if your job is likely to need one.
