What to think about for drive unit replacement in Dumfries and Galloway

  • Hospitals and care homes in Dumfries and Galloway may need an alternative entrance during the changeover. Plan signs and step-free access for wheelchair users before work starts.
  • Older shopfronts in Dumfries and Galloway may have headers made for discontinued operators. Adapter plates usually allow a new drive unit to fit, which the survey confirms before you commit.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in Dumfries and Galloway make it attractive to keep the existing frame. A new operator inside the existing header changes little that can be seen.
  • Busy retail entrances in Dumfries and Galloway may prefer the changeover after closing time or on a quiet trading day. Tell us your hours when you book the survey.
  • Ask for the paperwork. A converted door should come with its risk assessment, Declaration of Conformity and user instructions, which belong with your building and maintenance records.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for drive unit replacement and book a survey in Dumfries and Galloway.
  2. Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
  3. Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
  4. Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.

Keep the frame, replace the drive. Arrange a free survey in Dumfries and Galloway and receive a fixed quote covering the new operator, sensors and paperwork.

Drive unit replacement in Dumfries and Galloway: questions

What if the frame of our door in Dumfries and Galloway is not worth keeping?

Then we will tell you. Damaged or corroded frames, glass that is not safety glass, or an opening that is too narrow for the people using it are all reasons to choose a new door instead. We can quote both options so you can compare them side by side.

What price range should I expect for drive unit replacement in Dumfries and Galloway?

Our guide is £1,995 to £3,995 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in Dumfries and Galloway confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Do you replace automatic door drive units in Dumfries and Galloway?

Yes. We are the contracting party for drive unit replacements in Dumfries and Galloway, and the survey and changeover are carried out by specialist engineers we manage. The survey is free and checks that the frame and leaves are worth keeping. You then receive a fixed, itemised quote for the new operator, sensors and any other parts the door needs.

Do you provide paperwork for the converted door in Dumfries and Galloway?

Yes. When we fit a new drive unit we prepare the paperwork for the finished door, including the risk assessment, Declaration of Conformity and user instructions, and hand it over with the test results and settings. It belongs with your building records.

What is the lead time for drive unit replacement in Dumfries and Galloway?

Lead times depend on the door type and what has to be made to order. As a guide, operators and accessible door kits are typically two to four weeks from order, and complete sliding entrances typically four to eight weeks from drawing approval. Curved, revolving and hermetic doors usually take longer. The expected lead time is stated in your quote.

What power supply is needed for drive unit replacement in Dumfries and Galloway?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

Is a building warrant needed for a new automatic entrance in Dumfries and Galloway?

Often, yes. Most building work in Scotland needs a building warrant before it starts, and the non-domestic Technical Handbook sets out what an accessible entrance should provide, including a clear opening of at least 800 mm. We tell you at the survey if your job is likely to need one.
