What to think about for access control for automatic doors in Worcestershire

  • Decide how the door should behave at each time of day before the survey. Opening hours, cleaning shifts, deliveries and weekend events all affect the schedule the door will follow.
  • A video entry system needs a network or cable link between the door and wherever visitors are answered. Check the route before the survey, especially across car parks or between buildings.
  • Schools in Worcestershire often want a remote release at the office and a schedule for drop-off and pick-up times. Agree how the door behaves in a lockdown with your safeguarding lead.
  • Healthcare sites in Worcestershire often control access to wards and staff areas. Think about how visitors, porters and emergency teams will get through at every hour.
  • Offices on business parks in Worcestershire often share entrances between tenants. Agree whose system controls the door, who pays for it and who can add or remove cards.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is access control for automatic doors for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Worcestershire.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Access control for automatic doors in Worcestershire: questions

Will our door in Worcestershire still release when the fire alarm sounds?

On an escape route, yes. Locks are wired to release on the fire alarm signal and, where the fire strategy requires it, the door opens and holds open. We test this with your fire alarm contractor at handover and record the result.

What do you charge for access control for automatic doors in Worcestershire?

Our guide starts from £795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Worcestershire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you add access control to our automatic door in Worcestershire?

In most cases, yes. We check the operator's inputs, the lock options and the cable route at a free survey, then quote a fixed price. We can connect to your existing system or supply a standalone reader or keypad for the door.

Do you work with our security installer in Worcestershire?

Yes. Where a security installer already looks after your access control, we usually handle the door, the lock and the link to the operator, and they handle the reader, controller and permissions. The quote sets out who does what so nothing falls between the two.

Is there a warranty on access control for automatic doors?

Yes. The warranty terms for the equipment and the installation are set out in your written quote, so you can see exactly what is covered before you accept. Keeping the door serviced at the recommended intervals helps keep it in good order, and the quote explains any conditions that apply to the warranty.

Can installation in Worcestershire happen outside opening hours?

Yes. Many shops, surgeries and offices prefer work early in the morning, in the evening or at weekends, when the entrance is quietest. Tell us your constraints when you enquire and they are built into the plan. Any extra cost for out-of-hours work is shown in the written quote rather than added afterwards.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Worcestershire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
