What to think about for touch-free and push-button activation in Shropshire

  • Doors next to busy walkways can open for every passer-by on a motion sensor. A wave switch or push pad on that side may cut false openings and heat loss.
  • Look at where people approach the door from. A switch that can only be reached once someone is already at the door, or in the leaf's path, is in the wrong place.
  • Car parks and drop-off points in Shropshire benefit from a switch on a post, so drivers and passengers can open the door before they reach it.
  • Think about who should open the door out of hours. A key switch or timer can change the mode at night without affecting how the door works by day.
  • Wireless devices need batteries changing from time to time. Choose wired switches for the busiest public doors, and wireless where wiring would be difficult or would spoil a finished wall.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for touch-free and push-button activation in Shropshire, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Touch-free and push-button activation in Shropshire: questions

Do touch-free switches work in cold or wet weather in Shropshire?

Switches for outdoor use are sealed against rain and rated for outdoor temperatures. In exposed spots, a hood or a sheltered position helps. If a switch is outside, we specify one made for that rather than an indoor model, and check it is easy to see and reach in poor light.

What do you charge for touch-free and push-button activation in Shropshire?

Our guide starts from £145 excluding VAT (per switch fitted), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £174 including VAT. The free site survey in Shropshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you add touch-free switches to our automatic doors in Shropshire?

Usually, yes. Most operators have spare inputs for extra devices. We check the door, operator and wiring route at a free survey, then quote a fixed price for the switches and fitting. Wireless switches are an option where running cables would be difficult.

Do you fit door controls for homes in Shropshire?

Yes. We fit wall buttons, fobs, wristbands and wheelchair-mounted switches for home door openers in Shropshire. For homes, prices are quoted including VAT and the survey costs nothing. Fobs can be added or removed later if carers change or one is lost.

What does the free site survey in Shropshire involve?

An engineer working under our management visits the building, measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power supply, and looks at how people use the entrance. The survey is free and carries no obligation. Afterwards you receive a fixed, itemised written quote for touch-free and push-button activation, with drawings where the door type needs them.

What should I send before the survey in Shropshire?

A few photos of the door from inside and outside, rough measurements of the opening, the address and a note of how the entrance is used. If the door already has an operator, a photo of any label on it helps. With that, the engineer arrives prepared, the survey takes less of your time and we can put the quote for touch-free and push-button activation together more easily.

Can a home in Shropshire get help paying for a door opener?

Possibly. In England a Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 can fund adaptations that make it easier to get in and out of a home. It is means-tested and must be approved by the council before work starts, so ask your council and occupational therapist.
