What to think about for touch-free and push-button activation in Cheshire

  • Washrooms and accessible toilets in Cheshire need the inside switch paired with a lock button and an emergency release, so the room can be used privately and safely.
  • Doors next to busy walkways can open for every passer-by on a motion sensor. A wave switch or push pad on that side may cut false openings and heat loss.
  • Homes in Cheshire often need controls for more than one person. Carers, family and the person using the door may each need their own fob or button.
  • Clinics and surgeries in Cheshire often want touch-free switches on every door patients use. Sealed switch faces that stand up to cleaning products are worth specifying.
  • Look at where people approach the door from. A switch that can only be reached once someone is already at the door, or in the leaf's path, is in the wrong place.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Call, email or use the form with the address and what you have in mind. If you are not sure which type of door suits, describe the entrance and we will suggest the options worth considering.
  2. Survey and advice. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer checks the site and explains which options suit the entrance, the people using it and the budget, before anything is priced.
  3. Quote in writing. You receive a fixed, itemised quote for touch-free and push-button activation in Cheshire, covering equipment, installation, testing and handover, with the lead time and payment stages set out clearly.
  4. Install, test, explain. The engineer installs and commissions the door, tests the sensors, safety functions and emergency behaviour, and walks you through the controls. The handover pack records what was installed and tested.

Send us photos of the door and the switch you have now, and we will plan better activation for your building in Cheshire.

Touch-free and push-button activation in Cheshire: questions

Our door in Cheshire keeps opening for passers-by. Can you fix it?

Usually, by adjusting or narrowing the sensor field, or by changing to a switch on that side. If the sensor is old or faulty, it may need replacing. A visit to adjust or replace a sensor is priced in writing before anyone attends, as that is care work.

What price range should I expect for touch-free and push-button activation in Cheshire?

Our guide starts from £145 excluding VAT (per switch fitted), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £174 including VAT. The free site survey in Cheshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Do you fit door controls for homes in Cheshire?

Yes. We fit wall buttons, fobs, wristbands and wheelchair-mounted switches for home door openers in Cheshire. For homes, prices are quoted including VAT and the survey costs nothing. Fobs can be added or removed later if carers change or one is lost.

How long does it take to fit activation devices in Cheshire?

Lead time is typically 1 to 3 weeks for the devices. On site, a single switch usually takes an hour or two, and a full set for several doors may take a day. We give the expected time on site with the quote.

Will the building stay secure while the entrance is being changed?

We plan to keep the entrance usable or secure throughout. Where a door has to come out, the work is sequenced so the opening is closed up before the engineer leaves, or a temporary door or hoarding is arranged when a longer gap cannot be avoided. How this is handled for your site in Cheshire is agreed before work starts.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in Cheshire?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Cheshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
