Coverage across Shropshire

From large town centres to quiet villages, entrances across Shropshire vary a great deal, and the right approach to automatic internal doors varies with them. A surgery door used by patients with walking frames needs different settings from a supermarket entrance, so the engineer looks at the actual door first. The towns we list in this area currently number 4.

What to think about for automatic internal doors in Shropshire

  • Doors linked to the fire alarm need a signal from the alarm panel. Allow time for your fire alarm contractor to provide the connection and test it with us.
  • Check the fire rating of each door before the survey. Fire doors need operators made for them, and fixings and cables must not weaken the rating.
  • Measure what passes through the door, not just the door. Beds, hoists, trolleys and catering equipment can need a wider opening than the current door gives.
  • Offices in Shropshire with open-plan floors often have corridor fire doors that are held open by wedges. A proper hold-open device or operator removes the wedge and keeps the door working as a fire door.
  • Plan the work around the building's routine. Clinical areas, classrooms and kitchens in Shropshire may need out-of-hours working, which should be agreed and priced up front.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automatic internal doors for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Shropshire.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Automatic internal doors in Shropshire: questions

Do you supply internal sliding doors as well as swing operators in Shropshire?

Yes. Where there is wall space beside the opening, a sliding door keeps the corridor clear and gives a wide opening, which suits wards. Where there is not, or the door is a fire door, a swing operator is usually the better fit. The survey compares both.

What price range should I expect for automatic internal doors in Shropshire?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Shropshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Do you work in hospitals in Shropshire?

Yes. We work to the estates team's requirements for door widths, controls, infection control and fire alarm interfaces, and provide method statements, insurance details and the documents they ask for. Work on wards is usually planned out of hours or in phases.

Can you service the internal doors in Shropshire after fitting?

Yes. We can arrange planned servicing with each door's operator, sensors and fire alarm release checked and a written record left. Servicing is chargeable, and the price per visit is agreed in writing before an engineer attends. Visits can be grouped so several doors are done together.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in Shropshire?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in Shropshire?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Do businesses in Shropshire have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
