What to think about for touch-free and push-button activation in Devon

  • Car parks and drop-off points in Devon benefit from a switch on a post, so drivers and passengers can open the door before they reach it.
  • Listed buildings in Devon may restrict new fixings on historic walls. Wireless switches mounted on posts or glazing can avoid cutting into original fabric, and are easy to move later.
  • Think about who should open the door out of hours. A key switch or timer can change the mode at night without affecting how the door works by day.
  • Look at where people approach the door from. A switch that can only be reached once someone is already at the door, or in the leaf's path, is in the wrong place.
  • Wireless devices need batteries changing from time to time. Choose wired switches for the busiest public doors, and wireless where wiring would be difficult or would spoil a finished wall.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for touch-free and push-button activation and book a survey in Devon.
  2. Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
  3. Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
  4. Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.

Send us photos of the door and the switch you have now, and we will plan better activation for your building in Devon.

Touch-free and push-button activation in Devon: questions

Can wave switches in Devon be linked to our access control?

Yes. A wave switch can be set to work only after the access control system has released the lock, or to let people out freely from the inside while entry needs a card. We agree how it should behave and test it with your system at handover.

What will touch-free and push-button activation in Devon cost?

Our guide starts from £145 excluding VAT (per switch fitted), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £174 including VAT. The free site survey in Devon confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Our door in Devon keeps opening for passers-by. Can you fix it?

Usually, by adjusting or narrowing the sensor field, or by changing to a switch on that side. If the sensor is old or faulty, it may need replacing. A visit to adjust or replace a sensor is priced in writing before anyone attends, as that is care work.

Can you move a push pad that is in the wrong place at our building in Devon?

Yes. Moving a pad to a side wall or a post, away from the swinging leaf, often makes a big difference for wheelchair users. We set the new position at survey, quote the work, and test the door with the pad in its new place before we leave.

What power supply is needed for touch-free and push-button activation in Devon?

Most powered doors need a fused spur close to the operator, and some activation and access control devices also need a low-voltage link. The survey checks what is already there. If a new supply is required, the quote says whether we arrange it or your own electrician does, so nothing is left unclear on the day.

What does the free site survey in Devon involve?

An engineer working under our management visits the building, measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power supply, and looks at how people use the entrance. The survey is free and carries no obligation. Afterwards you receive a fixed, itemised written quote for touch-free and push-button activation, with drawings where the door type needs them.

Do businesses in Devon have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
