Covering Plymouth and nearby

If your building is in Plymouth, or anywhere in the PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5 and PL6 postcode districts, we can arrange touch-free and push-button activation. Visits are booked with you in advance, timed around opening hours where that matters, and carried out by engineers who work under our management.

Access in a city centre needs planning. Loading bays, permit parking, pedestrianised streets and delivery windows all affect when an engineer can unload, so a visit to Plymouth is booked around them and any restrictions are noted in advance.

Nearby towns we also list for touch-free and push-button activation (straight-line distance): Paignton (25.7 miles), Newton Abbot (25.8 miles), St Austell (27.9 miles), Torquay (27.9 miles).

What to think about for touch-free and push-button activation in Plymouth

  • Homes in Plymouth often need controls for more than one person. Carers, family and the person using the door may each need their own fob or button.
  • Car parks and drop-off points in Plymouth benefit from a switch on a post, so drivers and passengers can open the door before they reach it.
  • Look at where people approach the door from. A switch that can only be reached once someone is already at the door, or in the leaf's path, is in the wrong place.
  • If the door is linked to access control, decide whether the switch should work all the time or only when the access control has released the door. That changes how it is wired.
  • Think about who should open the door out of hours. A key switch or timer can change the mode at night without affecting how the door works by day.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is touch-free and push-button activation for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Plymouth.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Send us photos of the door and the switch you have now, and we will plan better activation for your building in Plymouth.

Touch-free and push-button activation in Plymouth: questions

Can you add touch-free switches to our automatic doors in Plymouth?

Usually, yes. Most operators have spare inputs for extra devices. We check the door, operator and wiring route at a free survey, then quote a fixed price for the switches and fitting. Wireless switches are an option where running cables would be difficult.

What will touch-free and push-button activation in Plymouth cost?

Our guide starts from £145 excluding VAT (per switch fitted), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £174 including VAT. The free site survey in Plymouth confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

How long does it take to fit activation devices in Plymouth?

Lead time is typically 1 to 3 weeks for the devices. On site, a single switch usually takes an hour or two, and a full set for several doors may take a day. We give the expected time on site with the quote.

Can you move a push pad that is in the wrong place at our building in Plymouth?

Yes. Moving a pad to a side wall or a post, away from the swinging leaf, often makes a big difference for wheelchair users. We set the new position at survey, quote the work, and test the door with the pad in its new place before we leave.

How much disruption should we expect while the work is done in Plymouth?

Most installations take one visit or a short series of visits, with dust and noise kept to the area around the door. The engineer screens off the work area, keeps a route in or out where possible and clears up before leaving. Larger entrances, lobbies or structural changes take longer, and the quote explains how that work is phased.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in Plymouth?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Do businesses in Plymouth have to fit automatic doors?

No law says every building must have automatic doors. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, and building regulations guidance in England calls for a powered door where an entrance door would otherwise be too heavy to open. An automatic door is often the simplest way to meet both.
