What to think about for telescopic sliding doors in the East Riding of Yorkshire

  • Entrances across the East Riding of Yorkshire that face the prevailing wind can suffer from leaves dragging or sensors reacting to blown debris. A canopy, a draught lobby or careful sensor set-up deals with most of these problems.
  • Grit and leaves blown into the threshold collect in floor guide channels. Entrances facing a car park or open ground benefit from a matwell or canopy, which also keeps rain off the sensors.
  • Measure the widest thing that has to pass through, whether that is a hospital bed, a mobility scooter or a cage of stock. The clear opening of a telescopic door is chosen from that figure, not from the size of the old doorway.
  • Shop units in the East Riding of Yorkshire that trade late or open early may want installation outside trading hours. Early starts and weekend work can usually be arranged and are shown as a separate line in the quote.
  • Medical centres in the East Riding of Yorkshire often share a frontage with a pharmacy or other units. Check who owns the shopfront and whether the landlord needs to approve a new entrance before the survey drawing is finalised.

Standards and rules in England

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. New entrances and some alterations count as building work, so check with building control before the work is ordered.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

Telescopic sliding doors in the East Riding of Yorkshire: questions

How much wider will our entrance in the East Riding of Yorkshire be with telescopic doors?

As a rough guide, a telescopic door gives about two-thirds of its overall width as clear opening, against about half for a standard sliding door. On a typical shop or surgery entrance that can mean an extra 300 to 600 mm. The survey drawing for your building in the East Riding of Yorkshire shows the exact clear width before you commit.

What do you charge for telescopic sliding doors in the East Riding of Yorkshire?

Our guide starts from £6,995 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in the East Riding of Yorkshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you look after the door in the East Riding of Yorkshire once it is installed?

Yes. We can quote planned servicing for the new door, with each visit priced in writing beforehand and the interval set by how heavily the door is used and the manufacturer's instructions. Busy entrances such as hospitals and supermarkets are usually serviced more often than quieter offices.

What paperwork do we get after installation in the East Riding of Yorkshire?

You receive the commissioning and test record, a site-specific risk assessment, user instructions and the conformity paperwork for the door. Keep them with your building records. They are the starting point for later servicing and safety inspections, and they show how the door was set up with reference to BS EN 16005.

What happens to the old door when a new one is fitted in the East Riding of Yorkshire?

If the work replaces an existing door, frame or operator, removal and disposal are listed in the quote. The old door comes out only when the new one is ready to go in, so the opening is not left empty for longer than necessary. Making good to the surrounding wall, floor or ceiling is included where the quote says so.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in the East Riding of Yorkshire?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in the East Riding of Yorkshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
