Telescopic sliding doors in Derby

When a shop unit or reception in Derby has its opening close to a corner, a column or a neighbouring window, ordinary sliding leaves often have nowhere to park. Telescopic leaves need far less wall, and our free survey shows exactly how much doorway you gain.

Covering Derby and nearby

If your building is in Derby, or anywhere in the DE1, DE3, DE21, DE22, DE23 and DE24 postcode districts, we can arrange telescopic sliding doors. Visits are booked with you in advance, timed around opening hours where that matters, and carried out by engineers who work under our management.

City-centre entrances tend to be the busiest doors of all: shopping centres, stations, hospitals and office towers can see thousands of passes a day. In Derby, that usually means heavy-duty operators, careful sensor set-up and servicing at intervals matched to the traffic.

Nearby towns we also list for telescopic sliding doors (straight-line distance): Belper (6.9 miles), Ilkeston (7.7 miles), Heanor (8.1 miles), Ripley (8.3 miles), Long Eaton (8.7 miles), Eastwood (9.1 miles).

What to think about for telescopic sliding doors in Derby

  • Power for the operator usually comes from a fused spur at the head of the door. Where the nearest supply is some distance away, plan for an electrician to run a new circuit before the fitting day.
  • Entrances used by ambulances and patient transport in Derby benefit from a full-opening button for crews, while everyday visitors use a narrower partial opening that keeps the waiting area warmer.
  • Shop units in Derby that trade late or open early may want installation outside trading hours. Early starts and weekend work can usually be arranged and are shown as a separate line in the quote.
  • Entrances across Derbyshire that face the prevailing wind can suffer from leaves dragging or sensors reacting to blown debris. A canopy, a draught lobby or careful sensor set-up deals with most of these problems.
  • Medical centres in Derby often share a frontage with a pharmacy or other units. Check who owns the shopfront and whether the landlord needs to approve a new entrance before the survey drawing is finalised.

Standards and rules in England

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the entrance. Send the address, a few photos and a rough size of the opening, and say how the door is used. That is enough for us to suggest options for telescopic sliding doors and book a survey in Derby.
  2. Free site survey. A specialist engineer working under our management measures the opening, checks the frame, floor, head height and power, and talks through how people use the entrance. There is no charge and no obligation.
  3. Fixed written quote. You receive a fixed, itemised written quote with the specification, lead time, payment stages and warranty terms. The price does not change unless the scope does, and any change is agreed in writing first.
  4. Installation and handover. The door is fitted on the agreed dates, then set up, tested and documented with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown the controls and the simple checks to make, and receive the handover paperwork.

Telescopic sliding doors in Derby: questions

Can our existing sliding door in Derby be converted to telescopic?

Not usually by modifying the old door, because the header, tracks and leaves are different. It is normally replaced as a complete set within the same opening. The survey checks whether the existing structure and floor can take the new door, and the quote shows removal of the old one as a separate line.

Is there a guide price for telescopic sliding doors in Derby?

Our guide starts from £6,995 excluding VAT (per door set), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in Derby confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Is the telescopic door survey in Derby really free?

Yes, for a new telescopic entrance the site survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. The engineer measures the opening, checks the structure, floor and power, and talks through layouts. You then receive a measured drawing and a fixed, itemised written quote, and you decide whether to go ahead.

How much wider will our entrance in Derby be with telescopic doors?

As a rough guide, a telescopic door gives about two-thirds of its overall width as clear opening, against about half for a standard sliding door. On a typical shop or surgery entrance that can mean an extra 300 to 600 mm. The survey drawing for your building in Derby shows the exact clear width before you commit.

What happens once the installation in Derby is finished?

The engineer tests every function, including the safety sensors and the behaviour on power loss, and sets the door up with reference to BS EN 16005. You are shown how to use the controls and which simple checks to make, and you receive the handover documents, including the test record and any conformity paperwork that applies to the work.

What do you need from us for parking and access in Derby?

Somewhere for the engineer's van as close to the entrance as possible, and a clear working area around the door. If parking is restricted, loading rules apply or the site has security procedures, tell us when you book. Those details go into the plan so the visit is not held up on the day.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Derby?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
