Sensor upgrades and replacement in the City of London

Not every sensor fault needs a new sensor. Engineers in the City of London check the detection zone, mounting and wiring first, and only replace a sensor when adjustment will not fix it. Any parts are quoted to you before they are fitted.

Covering the City of London and nearby

If your building is in the City of London, or anywhere in the EC2V, EC3M, EC3V, EC4N, EC4R and EC4V postcode districts, we can arrange sensor upgrades and replacement. Visits are booked with you in advance, timed around opening hours where that matters, and carried out by engineers who work under our management.

Space for materials and tools is limited at many addresses in the City of London, especially on narrow or pedestrianised streets in Greater London. Larger door sets are delivered for the time of fitting, and access and parking restrictions are planned into the visit.

Nearby towns we also list for sensor upgrades and replacement (straight-line distance): Whitechapel (1.1 miles), Islington (1.7 miles), Westminster (2.2 miles), Peckham (2.8 miles), Camden Town (2.9 miles), Holloway (3.1 miles).

What to think about for sensor upgrades and replacement in the City of London

  • Entrances facing busy roads in the City of London can see false openings from passing vehicles and cyclists. A sensor with direction detection and a tighter zone usually helps.
  • If several doors at one site have the same old sensor, replacing them together keeps the doors behaving consistently and may reduce the cost per sensor.
  • Shopping parades and older shopfronts in the City of London sometimes have low transoms or canopies that limit where a sensor can be mounted. The engineer checks height and angle first.
  • Rain, snow and blowing leaves can trigger radar sensors over exposed doors. Some sensors filter weather better than others, which the engineer weighs up when choosing a replacement.
  • After a near miss at a door in the City of London, keep a note of what happened and where the person was standing. It helps the engineer judge which zone the sensor failed to cover.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in the City of London: guide prices

The visit price is agreed in writing before an engineer attends; parts and any further work are quoted before they are done. Guide price: typically £195 to £495 ex VAT.

Standards and rules in England

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Share the details. Send the address in the City of London, the door type and make if you know it, and a description or video of the problem. For servicing, tell us how many doors there are and how busy each one is.
  2. Price confirmed in writing. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends. Some straightforward repairs can be priced in full from photos and the make and model of the door.
  3. Diagnosis and repair. A specialist engineer attends on the agreed date, finds the cause, repairs or services the door, and tests its operation, sensors and safety functions with reference to BS EN 16005.
  4. Written record. Each visit ends with a written record for your files. Anything still outstanding, such as parts on order or recommended upgrades, is quoted before any further work is done.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in the City of London: questions

Our door in the City of London closes on people. Is that a sensor fault?

It is likely, and the door should be treated as unsafe. Switch it to a safe mode, such as manual or open, and keep people away from the leaves. Tell us it is unsafe and we will give you the earliest visit we can offer, then the engineer will check the safety sensors and their zones.

What is the guide price for sensor upgrades and replacement in the City of London?

Our guide is £195 to £495 excluding VAT (per sensor fitted), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in the City of London, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Can a risk assessment in the City of London tell us which sensors we need?

Yes. A safety inspection tests each hazard zone and records where sensor coverage is missing or poor. The report then lists the sensors or light curtains needed, and we can quote those items exactly as listed, or you can pass the report to another competent installer.

Do you replace automatic door sensors in the City of London?

Yes. Sensor replacement and upgrades in the City of London are booked and managed by us and carried out by engineers who specialise in automatic doors. They work on sensors for sliding, swing, folding and revolving doors from most makers. The visit cost is set in writing before they attend, and each new sensor is tested before they leave.

Do you leave a written record after each visit in the City of London?

Yes. Every visit ends with a written record of what was checked, what was done and anything that still needs attention. For safety inspections you receive a report of the findings and a site-specific risk assessment. Keeping these on file is the usual way to show that a workplace door is maintained and in good working order.

What happens during a visit in the City of London?

The engineer checks how the door is operating, diagnoses the fault or carries out the service, and tests the safety sensors and other functions before leaving. On a service visit that includes cleaning, adjustment and lubrication where needed. Anything that cannot be put right on the visit, or that needs parts, is explained and quoted before further work goes ahead.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in the City of London?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
