What to think about for sensor upgrades and replacement in Dundee and Angus

  • Shopping parades and older shopfronts in Dundee and Angus sometimes have low transoms or canopies that limit where a sensor can be mounted. The engineer checks height and angle first.
  • Care settings in Dundee and Angus often need longer hold-open times and wider safety zones for residents who move slowly, use walking frames or pause in the doorway.
  • Sensor changes on escape route doors must never stop the door opening when it needs to. The engineer checks the door's escape mode after any sensor work.
  • Entrances facing busy roads in Dundee and Angus can see false openings from passing vehicles and cyclists. A sensor with direction detection and a tighter zone usually helps.
  • After a near miss at a door in Dundee and Angus, keep a note of what happened and where the person was standing. It helps the engineer judge which zone the sensor failed to cover.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Tell us what is happening. Describe the fault, or the service or inspection that is due, and send photos of the door and any label on the operator. Include the address in Dundee and Angus and how much the site depends on the door.
  2. Visit price agreed in writing. We confirm the price of the visit in writing before an engineer attends. If the door can be priced from photos and its make and model, we say so at this stage.
  3. Engineer visit. A specialist engineer working under our management diagnoses the fault or carries out the service, then tests the operation of the door and its safety sensors before leaving the site.
  4. Findings and follow-up. You receive a written record of what was found and done. Any parts or further work needed are quoted in writing before they go ahead, and nothing is added without your agreement.

Send a photo of the door and sensor at your building in Dundee and Angus, and we will confirm the visit price and the likely sensor before booking an engineer.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in Dundee and Angus: questions

Will you record the sensor settings for our building in Dundee and Angus?

Yes. The job report lists each sensor fitted, its position, the settings used and the test results. Keep it with your service records, as it helps future engineers and shows the door's safety set-up was checked after the work. The same details are useful if an insurer or inspector asks.

How are prices worked out for sensor upgrades and replacement in Dundee and Angus?

Our guide is £195 to £495 excluding VAT (per sensor fitted), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Dundee and Angus, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Will new sensors stop false openings at our entrance in Dundee and Angus?

Usually. Modern sensors can ignore cross traffic and detect only people moving towards the door, and the zone can be narrowed. If the entrance faces a busy street or catches heavy weather, the engineer may suggest a sensor that filters those conditions better.

Do engineers carry sensors for doors in Dundee and Angus?

Engineers carry common combined and safety sensors, so many replacements can be fitted at the first visit. Light curtains and specialist sensors are ordered once the door is identified, with delivery typically 1 to 2 weeks. Photos in advance help us bring the right part first time.

How is the visit price set for work in Dundee and Angus?

We agree the visit price with you in writing before an engineer attends. It is based on the type of door, the work requested and the location. If parts or further work are needed once the engineer has found the cause, those are quoted before they are done, so the cost never moves without your agreement.

Which makes of automatic door can you work on in Dundee and Angus?

Engineers working under our management work on most makes of automatic door, including sliding, swing, folding, telescopic and revolving types. Some older or obsolete operators have limited parts availability. If that applies, we explain the options, which may include a replacement drive unit on the existing frame, and quote them before anything is ordered.

Is a building warrant needed for a new automatic entrance in Dundee and Angus?

Often, yes. Most building work in Scotland needs a building warrant before it starts, and the non-domestic Technical Handbook sets out what an accessible entrance should provide, including a clear opening of at least 800 mm. We tell you at the survey if your job is likely to need one.
