Coverage across the Highlands

Our coverage of the Highlands is not tied to a depot or a showroom. Engineers who carry out revolving doors for us travel to each site, so a farm shop down a country lane goes through the same process as a city-centre office. Every job is priced in writing before work starts, and the town list below currently numbers 6.

Towns listed in the Highlands: Inverness, Fort William, Nairn, Thurso, Wick, Portree.

What to think about for revolving doors in the Highlands

  • The fire strategy decides how people will escape. Agree with your fire risk assessor where the pass door and other exits will be before the revolving door is designed.
  • Revolving doors with curved glass drum walls have longer lead times. Allow for them in any refurbishment programme across the Highlands, and confirm dates before booking floor layers or shopfitters.
  • Plan the pass door first. Wheelchair users, pushchairs and deliveries need an accessible powered door beside the drum, and it should be easy to find from the street in the Highlands, with clear signs.
  • A revolving door needs a flat, level floor and often a recess for the bottom bearing and mat. Check whether the existing slab can be cut, or whether the floor needs building up.
  • Busy reception areas in the Highlands may want to keep people moving during installation week. A second entrance, temporary signs and staged work all help visitors find their way in.

Standards and rules in Scotland

Building regulations guidance treats revolving doors as not accessible on their own, so an accessible powered swing or sliding door should be provided alongside. In Scotland, fire safety regulations say sliding or revolving doors must not be used for exits specifically intended as emergency exits, and Scottish guidance allows automatic and revolving doors on an escape route only where they fail safely to outward opening, or have a monitored fail-safe system that opens them on power failure, sensor failure and fire alarm.

In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking. Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

Scottish building standards guidance (the non-domestic Technical Handbook) expects an accessible entrance door to give a clear opening of at least 800 mm, says powered doors improve accessibility as long as they add no new hazard, and expects signage, sensors that hold the door open long enough, and guarding against collision or entrapment.

How it works

  1. Start with a short enquiry. Use the form, phone or email. Tell us whether the work is a new door, an upgrade or an opener for a home, and we arrange the next step for your site in the Highlands.
  2. Measured survey. The free survey confirms what will fit and what the entrance needs: opening width, door type, activation, safety sensors and behaviour on power loss or fire alarm, matched to how the building is used.
  3. Written price, no surprises. A fixed, itemised quote sets out the specification, the work involved, the expected lead time and the warranty terms. You can ask questions or change the specification before accepting it.
  4. Installed and commissioned. The door is installed with as little disruption as possible, then set up and tested for its hazard zones. Before leaving, the engineer explains the controls and hands over the documents for your records.

To cut draughts at a busy entrance in the Highlands, talk to us about revolving doors. The survey is free and there is no obligation.

Revolving doors in the Highlands: questions

Should we choose manual or automatic for our building in the Highlands?

Manual doors suit smaller entrances with steady traffic and are simpler to maintain. Automatic doors suit busier entrances and visitors with luggage, and add sensors, stop buttons and a slow-speed mode. We explain the difference at the survey and recommend the type that fits how your entrance is used.

What do you charge for revolving doors in the Highlands?

Our guide is £29,995 to £59,995 excluding VAT (per automatic door), the same guide prices we use across the UK. The free site survey in the Highlands confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Is the survey for a revolving door in the Highlands free?

Yes. For a new revolving door and pass door, the survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. We look at the space, structure, floor, traffic and fire strategy, then send drawings and a fixed, itemised written quote. Each item is listed separately, which makes it easy to compare with other quotes.

Will a revolving door in the Highlands work with our fire alarm?

It can. An automatic revolving door can be linked to the fire alarm so it stops, slows or folds as the fire strategy requires, and the pass door can be set to open. Your alarm engineer usually makes the panel connection, and the quote shows who is responsible for each part.

Do you service doors in the Highlands after installing them?

Yes. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Servicing can follow on from the installation, with the price agreed in writing and a record left after every visit.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in the Highlands?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Is a building warrant needed for a new automatic entrance in the Highlands?

Often, yes. Most building work in Scotland needs a building warrant before it starts, and the non-domestic Technical Handbook sets out what an accessible entrance should provide, including a clear opening of at least 800 mm. We tell you at the survey if your job is likely to need one.
