Automating an existing door in Wiltshire

If you would rather keep your existing door in Wiltshire than replace it, we can usually add a swing or sliding operator to it. The door is tested and documented at handover, along with the paperwork that comes with a newly automated door.

Automating an existing door across Wiltshire follows a simple pattern: you tell us about the door, we agree the price in writing, and a specialist engineer working under our management attends. What to think about for automating an existing door in Wiltshire

  • Glass in a door that will be automated should be safety glass. Older doors in Wiltshire may have panes that need replacing before the work goes ahead.
  • Schools and community buildings in Wiltshire may prefer the work done in holidays or after hours. Ask for any out-of-hours working to be priced in the quote.
  • If the door is on an escape route, keep the existing panic or emergency hardware working. The operator should not stop the door opening by hand in an emergency.
  • Doors facing the weather in exposed parts of Wiltshire are pushed about by wind. The survey checks whether a low-energy operator will cope or a stronger unit is needed.
  • Find out whether the door is a fire door. If it is, the operator must suit fire doors and be wired so the door closes when the alarm sounds.

Standards and rules in England

Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers and employers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, which can include altering a physical feature such as a heavy entrance door. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

Building regulations guidance in England (Approved Document M, Volume 2) says a powered opening system should be used where a self-closing entrance door would need more than 30 N at the leading edge to open, or more than 22.5 N between 30° and 60°, and expects external doors used by the public in new buildings to give at least 1000 mm of effective clear width.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Great Britain a new or converted powered door must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 before it is first used, and can carry the UKCA or the CE marking.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automating an existing door for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in Wiltshire.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Ask us to look at the doors at your premises in Wiltshire. If a retrofit makes sense, you get a fixed quote, and if replacement is better, we explain why.

Automating an existing door in Wiltshire: questions

Do you provide the paperwork for an automated door in Wiltshire?

Yes. Motorising a manual door brings manufacturer's duties for the completed powered door, so when we automate a door we provide the risk assessment, test record, settings and conformity paperwork at handover. Keep them with your building records, as insurers, inspectors and future service engineers may ask to see them.

Can you give me a price for automating an existing door in Wiltshire?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £2,154 including VAT. The free site survey in Wiltshire confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Can you automate a fire door at our premises in Wiltshire?

Usually, using an operator designed for fire doors and wired to the fire alarm so the door closes when the alarm operates. We check the door's rating and condition first. A fire door that does not close and seal properly needs repairing before an operator goes on.

Can you look after the door in Wiltshire once it is automated?

Yes. We can arrange servicing at intervals that suit how much the door is used, with the operator, safety devices and hinges checked and a written record left. Each visit has its price confirmed in writing before an engineer attends.

What should I send before the survey in Wiltshire?

A few photos of the door from inside and outside, rough measurements of the opening, the address and a note of how the entrance is used. If the door already has an operator, a photo of any label on it helps. With that, the engineer arrives prepared, the survey takes less of your time and we can put the quote for automating an existing door together more easily.

Do I need permission from a landlord or the council before work in Wiltshire?

It depends on the building. Tenants usually need the landlord's written consent before changing an entrance, and some changes to a shopfront or external door need planning permission. The survey notes anything that may need consent. We can supply drawings and product details to support an application, but the owner or tenant makes it.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Wiltshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
