Automating an existing door in County Antrim

Shops, offices and schools in County Antrim often have aluminium or timber doors that are fine apart from the effort needed to open them. A retrofit operator removes that effort and leaves the frontage looking the same.

What to think about for automating an existing door in County Antrim

  • Schools and community buildings in County Antrim may prefer the work done in holidays or after hours. Ask for any out-of-hours working to be priced in the quote.
  • Homes in County Antrim with uPVC or composite doors can usually be automated, but the multipoint lock needs to work smoothly first. A stiff lock is best fixed before fitting.
  • Listed buildings and conservation areas in County Antrim may need consent for an operator on an original door. Mounting it on the inside face usually keeps the street view the same.
  • Doors facing the weather in exposed parts of County Antrim are pushed about by wind. The survey checks whether a low-energy operator will cope or a stronger unit is needed.
  • Think about how the door is locked. If it is locked by key every night, an electric lock or keep may be worth adding so the door can be secured without switching the operator off.

Standards and rules in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, disability access duties come from the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, because the Equality Act 2010 does not apply there. Service providers and employers are expected to make reasonable adjustments, and an automatic door is a common one at entrances. Fitting an automatic door helps, but does not on its own guarantee those duties are met.

The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 require a powered door to have a means to prevent it trapping anyone and a means to open it if the power fails. Guidance on access to buildings is in Technical Booklet R, and building control approval is needed for new entrances.

Whoever motorises a manual door, or builds an automatic door from separate parts, may take on the manufacturer’s legal duties for the finished door: a risk assessment, a technical file kept available for the authorities, a Declaration of Conformity, the conformity marking and instructions. You receive the Declaration of Conformity and the instructions at handover. In Northern Ireland machinery, including a new or converted powered door, carries the CE marking (with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment), and the EU Machinery Regulation applies there from 20 January 2027.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is automating an existing door for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in County Antrim.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Automating an existing door in County Antrim: questions

Can you automate the existing doors at our building in County Antrim?

In most cases, yes. We check each door at a free survey, including the hinges, frame, glass, locks and power, and then quote a fixed price. If a door is not a good candidate, we explain why and what it would take to fix it, or quote a replacement instead.

What will automating an existing door in County Antrim cost?

Our guide starts from £1,795 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £2,154 including VAT. The free site survey in County Antrim confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Will automating our door in County Antrim need planning permission?

Fitting an operator to an existing door does not usually need planning permission, but a listed building may need consent for fixings or new switches on the outside. In a conservation area, mounting the operator inside often avoids any change to the street view. Check with the planning authority if in doubt.

Can you automate a front door at a house in County Antrim?

Yes. Front doors at home are often automated for wheelchair users and people with limited grip, usually with an electric keep or lock so the door locks itself as it closes. Home prices are quoted including VAT, and the survey is free.

What should I send before the survey in County Antrim?

A few photos of the door from inside and outside, rough measurements of the opening, the address and a note of how the entrance is used. If the door already has an operator, a photo of any label on it helps. With that, the engineer arrives prepared, the survey takes less of your time and we can put the quote for automating an existing door together more easily.

Do you service doors in County Antrim after installing them?

Yes. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Servicing can follow on from the installation, with the price agreed in writing and a record left after every visit.

Which marking should a new automatic door in County Antrim carry?

In Northern Ireland machinery carries the CE marking, with UKNI added where a UK body carried out the conformity assessment. The EU Machinery Regulation applies in Northern Ireland from 20 January 2027.
