Covering March and nearby

We do not keep premises in March. Instead, enquiries about safety and compliance upgrades come to us, we agree the price in writing, and a specialist engineer working under our management travels to the address in the PE15 postcode district on a date that suits the site.

Older shopfronts are common in market towns, and some in March may sit in a conservation area or a listed building. Changes to a frontage can need planning permission or listed building consent, so it is worth checking with the local planning authority before work is booked.

Nearby towns we also list for safety and compliance upgrades (straight-line distance): Wisbech (8.5 miles), Ely (12.8 miles), Peterborough (14.2 miles), King's Lynn (18.9 miles), Spalding (19.1 miles), Huntingdon (19.2 miles).

What to think about for safety and compliance upgrades in March

  • Very old controllers may not support modern monitored sensors. In that case a new drive unit with sensors can cost less than several separate upgrades.
  • Schools and nurseries need particular attention to finger traps at hinges and beside screens, where small children's hands could easily be caught as the door moves.
  • Programme switches within reach of the public in March should be key-operated or protected, so the door cannot be left in an unsafe mode by mistake.
  • Escape route doors must open, break out or be openable by hand as the fire strategy requires. Check what yours says before choosing which upgrades to make.
  • Busy retail and public buildings in March may prefer upgrade work out of hours. Most single-door upgrades are completed in one visit, so disruption is limited.

Standards and rules in England

Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible. BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them.

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance.

How it works

  1. Describe what you need. Whether the job is safety and compliance upgrades for a busy entrance or for a single internal door, a brief description and some photos let us understand it and plan a survey visit in March.
  2. Free visit to the site. An engineer working under our management assesses the opening, the existing door and frame, the floor and the electrical supply, and notes any access, consent or timing issues to plan around.
  3. Your fixed quotation. The quote is fixed for the work it describes and lists each item, including any removal, making good and electrical work. It also states the lead time, the payment stages and the warranty terms.
  4. Fitting and sign-off. Work goes ahead on dates agreed with you. Once fitted, the door is adjusted and its safety functions are tested and recorded with reference to BS EN 16005, and you are shown how to use it.

Send us your inspection report for doors in March, and we will arrange a free survey and quote each upgrade as a separate item.

Safety and compliance upgrades in March: questions

How long do upgrades take at premises in March?

Most single-door upgrades take one visit of a few hours. Parts such as light curtains and battery units are typically 1 to 3 weeks to arrive after the quote is accepted. Larger packages are planned with you so the entrance stays usable wherever possible.

Is there a guide price for safety and compliance upgrades in March?

Our guide starts from £195 excluding VAT (per door), the same guide price we use across the UK. The free site survey in March confirms the price as a fixed, itemised written quote, and the guide price tool gives you a range before anyone visits.

Our door in March has no battery backup. Do we need one?

It depends on whether the door is on an escape route and what the fire strategy for the building requires. Doors on escape routes usually need to open, break out or be openable by hand if the power fails. The person responsible for fire safety in the building should confirm the requirement.

Is it cheaper to upgrade or replace our old door in March?

Upgrading is usually cheaper when the door and operator are sound. If the operator is old and several upgrades are needed, a new drive unit with new sensors may be better value overall. The survey compares the options, and the quote can show both so you can decide.

Can automatic doors be fitted to a listed building in March?

Often, yes, but listed building consent is normally needed for changes that affect the character of the building, inside or out. Slim operators, concealed fixings and automating the existing door can all reduce the visual impact. Speak to the conservation officer at the local planning authority early; we can provide drawings and specifications to help.

How are payments structured for work in March?

Payment stages are set out in the quote before you accept it. Larger or made-to-order jobs may involve a deposit and a balance on completion, while smaller jobs may be invoiced once the work is finished. Nothing is charged for the survey itself, and the terms you accept are the terms that apply.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in March?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
