What to think about for automatic door repairs in Greater Manchester

  • Older shopfronts in Greater Manchester may have automatic doors with discontinued drive units. Ask whether parts are still available before agreeing to a large repair, as a new operator may be better value.
  • Doors knocked by trolleys, pushchairs or deliveries often go out of line. Repeated impacts damage rollers and floor guides, so it helps to know roughly when the fault first appeared.
  • Shopping parades and business parks in Greater Manchester can have restricted parking or loading. Tell us where an engineer can park and unload tools when you book the visit.
  • Leisure centres, schools and public buildings in Greater Manchester may need a contractor induction or permit before work starts. Send any site rules with your booking so the visit can go ahead first time.
  • Glass damage needs prompt action to keep people safe. Switch the door off, keep people back from the broken leaf and tape or board the glass if that can be done safely.

Standards and rules in England

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Share the details. Send the address in Greater Manchester, the door type and make if you know it, and a description or video of the problem. For servicing, tell us how many doors there are and how busy each one is.
  2. Price confirmed in writing. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends. Some straightforward repairs can be priced in full from photos and the make and model of the door.
  3. Diagnosis and repair. A specialist engineer attends on the agreed date, finds the cause, repairs or services the door, and tests its operation, sensors and safety functions with reference to BS EN 16005.
  4. Written record. Each visit ends with a written record for your files. Anything still outstanding, such as parts on order or recommended upgrades, is quoted before any further work is done.

Get your entrance working again. Describe the fault at your premises in Greater Manchester and we will tell you what the visit costs and when an engineer can attend.

Automatic door repairs in Greater Manchester: questions

Do you repair automatic doors in Greater Manchester?

Yes. We take the booking, agree the price and manage the job, and the visit in Greater Manchester is made by a specialist automatic door engineer working under our management. The engineers we send work on sliding, swing, folding and revolving doors from most makers, including doors we did not install. The visit price is confirmed with you in writing before the engineer is booked.

How much should I budget for automatic door repairs in Greater Manchester?

Our guide starts from £95 excluding VAT (visit including the first hour), the same guide price we use across the UK. For homes that is from £114 including VAT. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Greater Manchester, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Can you tell me the cost before visiting my premises in Greater Manchester?

We always confirm the visit price before attending. For some faults, photos of the door and the operator label let us price the repair itself in advance. Where the cause needs testing on site, parts and extra work are quoted after diagnosis and only go ahead if you agree.

How soon can an engineer get to my door in Greater Manchester?

That depends on engineer availability around Greater Manchester when you contact us, so we do not promise a time. Tell us whether the door is stuck open, stuck shut or unsafe, and we will tell you the earliest visit we can offer. Meanwhile, set the door to a safe mode and keep people away from the leaves.

How is the visit price set for work in Greater Manchester?

We agree the visit price with you in writing before an engineer attends. It is based on the type of door, the work requested and the location. If parts or further work are needed once the engineer has found the cause, those are quoted before they are done, so the cost never moves without your agreement.

How often should automatic doors in Greater Manchester be serviced?

No law sets a fixed interval. We recommend a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer's instructions and how heavily the door is used; busy doors are often serviced more often. Site staff should also carry out simple regular checks and keep a record of them.

Can a home in Greater Manchester get help paying for a door opener?

Possibly. In England a Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 can fund adaptations that make it easier to get in and out of a home. It is means-tested and must be approved by the council before work starts, so ask your council and occupational therapist.
