Sensor upgrades and replacement in the West Midlands

For care homes and healthcare buildings in the West Midlands, sensor set-up matters as much as the hardware. Safety zones are set to detect people standing still or moving slowly, with longer hold-open times where residents or patients need them.

Coverage across the West Midlands

Our coverage of the West Midlands is not tied to a depot or a showroom. Engineers who carry out sensor upgrades and replacement for us travel to each site, so a farm shop down a country lane goes through the same process as a city-centre office. Every job is priced in writing before work starts, and the town list below currently numbers 24.

Towns listed in the West Midlands: Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, West Bromwich, Halesowen, Stourbridge, Smethwick, Willenhall, Tipton, Bloxwich, Oldbury, Wednesfield, Shirley, Bilston, Brierley Hill, Aldridge, Rowley Regis, Sedgley, Wednesbury, Kingswinford.

What to think about for sensor upgrades and replacement in the West Midlands

  • If several doors at one site have the same old sensor, replacing them together keeps the doors behaving consistently and may reduce the cost per sensor.
  • Sites in the West Midlands that open early or close late may want sensor work done outside trading hours. Tell us the quieter times when you book the visit.
  • Doors with side screens may need a light curtain on the leaf edge or post to protect the gap. This is one of the most common upgrades on older sliding doors.
  • Care settings in the West Midlands often need longer hold-open times and wider safety zones for residents who move slowly, use walking frames or pause in the doorway.
  • Corridor doors that people walk past rather than through may work better on a touch-free switch than a motion sensor, cutting needless openings and heat loss.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in the West Midlands: guide prices

The visit price is agreed in writing before an engineer attends; parts and any further work are quoted before they are done. Guide price: typically £195 to £495 ex VAT.

Sensor prices cover the part, fitting and set-up. If a sensor is fitted on a visit of its own, the visit charge (from £95 ex VAT) is added, and we confirm the total in writing before an engineer attends. Each sensor is set up for the door and tested before the engineer leaves.

Standards and rules in England

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Explain the problem. Whether the door is stuck, slow, noisy or due its next check, a short description and a few photos tell us which kind of visit to book for sensor upgrades and replacement and what to bring.
  2. Visit cost agreed. You get the visit price in writing before we book the engineer. There are no hidden extras: parts and further work are always quoted separately and in advance.
  3. Engineer on site. The engineer inspects the operator, sensors, tracks and leaves, carries out the repair or service, and runs the door through its safety tests before it goes back into use.
  4. Follow-up quoted. You are sent a record of the visit. If something else needs attention, we quote it in writing; for doors on a service plan, the next visit date is noted on the record.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in the West Midlands: questions

Can you price new sensors for my door in the West Midlands from photos?

Often, yes. Photos of the sensor, the door from both sides and the label on the operator cover usually tell us which sensor is needed and whether it suits the controller. We can then quote the sensor and fitting in advance, with the visit price confirmed before anyone travels.

How are prices worked out for sensor upgrades and replacement in the West Midlands?

Our guide is £195 to £495 excluding VAT (per sensor fitted), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in the West Midlands, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Our door in the West Midlands closes on people. Is that a sensor fault?

It is likely, and the door should be treated as unsafe. Switch it to a safe mode, such as manual or open, and keep people away from the leaves. Tell us it is unsafe and we will give you the earliest visit we can offer, then the engineer will check the safety sensors and their zones.

Do you replace automatic door sensors in the West Midlands?

Yes. Sensor replacement and upgrades in the West Midlands are booked and managed by us and carried out by engineers who specialise in automatic doors. They work on sensors for sliding, swing, folding and revolving doors from most makers. The visit cost is set in writing before they attend, and each new sensor is tested before they leave.

Can visits in the West Midlands be arranged outside working hours?

Yes, where the site needs it. Early-morning, evening and weekend visits can be arranged for shops, surgeries and offices that cannot lose their entrance during the day. Any difference in price for out-of-hours attendance is agreed in writing before the visit is booked, alongside the standard visit price.

Which makes of automatic door can you work on in the West Midlands?

Engineers working under our management work on most makes of automatic door, including sliding, swing, folding, telescopic and revolving types. Some older or obsolete operators have limited parts availability. If that applies, we explain the options, which may include a replacement drive unit on the existing frame, and quote them before anything is ordered.

Who is responsible for automatic doors on escape routes in the West Midlands?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person for the premises must make sure escape routes work and fire safety equipment is maintained. Automatic doors on an escape route need fail-safe opening or break-out, set by the fire strategy.
