Sensor upgrades and replacement in Nottinghamshire

Shops, surgeries and offices in Nottinghamshire rely on sensors that open the door in good time and keep people safe in the doorway. When they wear out, replacements are matched to the door's controller and set for the way people approach.

What to think about for sensor upgrades and replacement in Nottinghamshire

  • Entrances facing busy roads in Nottinghamshire can see false openings from passing vehicles and cyclists. A sensor with direction detection and a tighter zone usually helps.
  • Swing doors in narrow corridors need sensors on the leaf to protect people on both sides. The engineer checks the swing path and any walls or fittings close by.
  • Corridor doors that people walk past rather than through may work better on a touch-free switch than a motion sensor, cutting needless openings and heat loss.
  • Shiny, wet or newly polished floors can confuse infrared safety sensors. Mention any recent floor changes at your building in Nottinghamshire so the zones can be set for the new surface.
  • Doors with side screens may need a light curtain on the leaf edge or post to protect the gap. This is one of the most common upgrades on older sliding doors.

Standards and rules in England

Workplace law (the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992) expects powered doors to have suitable and effective features to stop them trapping anyone and, where needed for safety, to open by hand unless they open automatically if the power fails. Doors at work must also be kept in efficient working order under a suitable system of maintenance. HSE guidance on those regulations says the frequency of maintenance depends on the equipment and the manufacturer’s information.

No law sets a fixed service interval. We recommend that a trained engineer checks the safety functions at least once a year, with service intervals set by the manufacturer’s instructions and how heavily the door is used, and that someone on site carries out simple regular checks and keeps a record.

BS EN 16005 is the current standard for the safety in use of powered pedestrian doors, and BS 7036-0:2014 is the British code of practice for risk assessment and risk reduction used alongside it. Standards are not law in themselves, but they are the recognised benchmark for showing an automatic door is safe to use, and we set up, test and document doors with reference to them. Standards are not retrospective, so an older door does not become unlawful when a standard is updated; a site-specific risk assessment shows whether any upgrades are sensible.

How it works

  1. Explain the problem. Whether the door is stuck, slow, noisy or due its next check, a short description and a few photos tell us which kind of visit to book for sensor upgrades and replacement and what to bring.
  2. Visit cost agreed. You get the visit price in writing before we book the engineer. There are no hidden extras: parts and further work are always quoted separately and in advance.
  3. Engineer on site. The engineer inspects the operator, sensors, tracks and leaves, carries out the repair or service, and runs the door through its safety tests before it goes back into use.
  4. Follow-up quoted. You are sent a record of the visit. If something else needs attention, we quote it in writing; for doors on a service plan, the next visit date is noted on the record.

Sensor upgrades and replacement in Nottinghamshire: questions

Our door in Nottinghamshire closes on people. Is that a sensor fault?

It is likely, and the door should be treated as unsafe. Switch it to a safe mode, such as manual or open, and keep people away from the leaves. Tell us it is unsafe and we will give you the earliest visit we can offer, then the engineer will check the safety sensors and their zones.

What price range should I expect for sensor upgrades and replacement in Nottinghamshire?

Our guide is £195 to £495 excluding VAT (per sensor fitted), the same guide prices we use across the UK. We agree the visit price in writing before an engineer attends in Nottinghamshire, and quote any parts or further work before doing them. The price guide lists typical repair and service costs.

Can you upgrade sensors on an old door in Nottinghamshire?

Most older doors can take modern sensors. A few very old controllers cannot monitor current safety sensors. If yours is one of them, we explain whether a controller upgrade or a new drive unit is the better option, and quote it, before any work is done.

Can you price new sensors for my door in Nottinghamshire from photos?

Often, yes. Photos of the sensor, the door from both sides and the label on the operator cover usually tell us which sensor is needed and whether it suits the controller. We can then quote the sensor and fitting in advance, with the visit price confirmed before anyone travels.

Can you price a repair in Nottinghamshire from photos?

Sometimes. Clear photos of the door, the operator cover and any label showing the make and model, plus a description of what the door is doing, can let us price a likely repair before a visit. Where the cause is not obvious, we agree a diagnostic visit price in writing first and quote the repair afterwards.

Which makes of automatic door can you work on in Nottinghamshire?

Engineers working under our management work on most makes of automatic door, including sliding, swing, folding, telescopic and revolving types. Some older or obsolete operators have limited parts availability. If that applies, we explain the options, which may include a replacement drive unit on the existing frame, and quote them before anything is ordered.

Which building regulations apply to a new automatic entrance in Nottinghamshire?

In England the guidance is Approved Document M (Volume 2) for access, Approved Document B for fire safety and escape routes, and Approved Document K for glazing and powered doors. A new entrance can count as building work, so building control should be involved before it is ordered.
